I just discovered another of those guys that gives you 100 rupees when you find his hiding place.

There was a hidden 1up block in Mario 3 that I found that wasn't in the official strategy guide. I was very proud of myself that day.

but by a while I'd mean, err, back in '05? everything from pre-Power 1987 thru 2001.

Does anyone remember that black Nintendo book/strategy guide you could get back in the day. It had maps to everything in it. Metroid/Super Mario/Zelda and so on. That's what I want and it's most likely $Texas on eBay.

Did anyone else have the Nintendo book written by some guy and his son, and on the front cover, it showed a half-human, half-robot (cyborg, as it were) playing Nintendo?

I can't remember what that book's called at all.

Haha, bingo. That was a great book; if I remember right, it was just a random father-son team who wrote it for a bunch of NES games.

I remember that. I also remember when Nintendo Power had that big promotion with 4 free player's guides if you subscribed for two years. There was the NES Atlas, the Game Boy Guide, Super Mario World Guide, and the big book of codes IIRC. Man that takes me back.

At one point I had every Nintendo Power from issue 1-60, maybe a few more after that. Also had a few of the newsletters they sent out before they turned them into a full magazine. I still have one of the Team Power pins that you got for renewing your subscription too.

On sunday I went through Super Mario World and completely (as in all levels and all exits: *96) finished it in one sitting My wife was not as enthused as I.

[Edited on May 12, 2009 at 10:01 AM. Reason : I really want her to pick up and play Super Mario RPG but fat chance.]

^^^^ It always bothers me how "select" has been added by many as part of the Konami code. But just a little bit.

^^ jeeze

I want to do the whole Mario 3 all levels no dying. I have done the double whistle to the end without dying, but the stamina factor for all the levels seems a bit much.

it was called nintendo fun club. i send in three of those fliers to get it and I got three issues of fun club every time, and when i subscribed to nintendo power, i got three each of those too. i know ive got at least two of every issue up till about #6

remember issue #2 when Simon's Quest came out, so on the cover they had some dude holding a SEVERED BLOODY HEAD by the hair?

i remember parents being "concerned" about that

oh and the "Black book", some of the SUPER secret stuff was written in red ink (SO it couldn't be photocopied and then re-distributed!) and it also made the shit damn near impossible to read

I always said you could tell who grew up with friends by how they recited the Konami code. If they threw select in there that means they were playing a 2 player game, but if they didn't, that means they always played by themselves.

You can play a good number of old NES games here (w/o having to download an emulator):

http://www.nintendo8.com/

I've been killing a lot of time playing Bad News Baseball.
