Quote : | "Remember Ian Tomlinson, the middle-aged man who collapsed and died of a heart attack at the G20 demonstrations last week in London?
He was not one of the demonstrators — he was on his way home from work — and at the time his death was reported as a coincidence. Nothing to do with the police or the demos.
News stories said that police and emergency workers were hindered in their attempts to help the dying man by demonstrators who pelted them with bottles and other missiles. The police also asserted that they had had no previous interaction with Mr. Tomlinson before he collapsed.
Since then evidence has surfaced showing that the police account of Ian Tomlinson’s death is — to put it kindly — not entirely candid. Watch the footage below and see an officer apparently strike Mr. Tomlinson from behind with his baton, and them vigorously shove him face-first to the ground. After that Mr. Tomlinson was helped up by bystanders, staggered away, and collapsed again a few moments later." |

Those power-tripping cops should be jailed for life/executed for the murder of Ian Tomlinson. He was an innocent passerby and he was viciously attacked by the police for no reason while he was walking with his back to them and walking away from them.

this brand of cowardice became granular to me during the NBA brawl involving Ron Artest.
Ron Artest knew he could never step to Ben Wallace, so his bitch ass took it out on the weakest passer-by.
people like that need a severe dose of punishment. 4/9/2009 10:30:35 AM |

I hadn't read the Guardian link when I posted that. Just read it now, and it is just even more angering and disgusting.
Apparently, according to several witnesses, he had already been hit, pushed to the ground, and rushed along forcefully, BEFORE that video was shot. Even then, he said or did nothing to the fascist pigs. And then as you see on the video, they hit him again and shoved him to the ground, and he suffered a heart attack moments later.
And here is the official account on the night he died:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/apr/08/ian-tomlinson-g20-death-official-police-account
Quote : | "In an official statement on the night of Tomlinson's death, the Metropolitan police made no reference to any contact with officers and simply described attempts by police medics and an ambulance crew to save his life after he collapsed – efforts they said were marred by protesters throwing missiles as first aid was administered .
The force said officers had created a cordon around Tomlinson to give him CPR.
"The officers took the decision to move him as during this time a number of missiles - believed to be bottles - were being thrown at them," it said.
Yesterday, the IPCC began managing an investigation by City of London police into the circumstances of Tomlinson's death after the Guardian published photographs of him on the ground and witness statements indicated he had been assaulted by police officers." |
The fucking pigs then have the nerve to lie about it.
Seriously, they should go to jail for life for 1st degree murder.
Unfortunately, IF ANYTHING HAPPENS, they will be slapped with a manslaughter charge, and perhaps a few months to a year in jail.4/9/2009 10:44:48 AM |

Murder??? Such strong words. Manslaughter would be more appropriate. Stupid officer, in the heat of the moment, does something stupid and kills a man. Sucks for him. Apply the appropriate manslaughter charges and be done with it. 4/9/2009 10:49:47 AM |

I question whether you can charge someone with murder for "causing" a heart attack by hitting or pushing someone. It seems to me like the heart attack was the result of the person's own health. I can see how it might have played out very differently if he had the heart attack three weeks later at work rather than in the middle of a riot though. I just think it's a slippery slope. Unfortunately we don't live in a black & white world and this seems like one of those gray areas. Remember not too long ago when a guy here in the US was charged for the death of a woman who passed away when he broke into her house? She had a heart attack too iirc. Where do you draw the line?
I do agree that they should be charged with whatever the Brits call their assault and battery charges. And I think he should face appropriate administrative punishments such as loss of his job and benefits. Maybe even manslaughter as ^ said. Not murder though.

I can actually understand the cop hitting the guy (to some degree - it was a mistake)
There were a lot of protestors and in situations like those cops dont see people they just have their orders and peons to carry them out on. Im sure a lot of people got hit that day, hitting this guy was just a mistake.
but when they start to lie about it and cover it up. Thats the biggest outrage to me. There are hundreds of people standing around, how are you going to get away with that?
fuckin bobbies

Was the guy killed mentally handicapped/retarded? Look at the video, you see a line of police coming towards you, it would be a good idea to get the fuck out of the way, put your hands up, do something. Instead the dude puts his hands in his pockets, and slowly shuffles in front the the approaching police... yeah... something is up there. Either the guy was stupid/retarded, or he was trying to instigate something. 4/9/2009 11:12:36 AM |

I just watched the video twice to maybe see what you guys are bitching about and I still don't see anything wrong with what the riot police did.
When I read a 'wall of police' i expected a fucking wall not cops scattered here and there. This guy was just asking for trouble and attention and he got it. 4/9/2009 11:18:55 AM |

this is another case of police lying about what happened, so they themselves must have thought what they did was wrong.4/9/2009 11:34:13 AM |

I think knowingly leaving very relavent info out of a police report falls under lying....We can say attempted coverup if it suits you better.
Point is, why leave this info out if they didn't think they were in the wrong and trying to cover it up?4/9/2009 11:47:31 AM |

it was the night of. not enough time to gather enough information to determine what happens. get over your whole cover up conspiracy theory bullshit. The police did their jobs well. 4/9/2009 12:01:10 PM |

you really think things weren't chaotic at the time of the incident that they'd get it right the first time around?
i don't even know why we're discussing it, its not like the cops did anything wrong in the first place. 4/9/2009 12:40:08 PM |

sad situation.
however, its hard to place the blame solely with the police. the demonstrators facilitated this action with their previous actions. this man acted stupidly within a volatile situation.
there is a lot of blame to go around. 4/9/2009 12:48:24 PM |

yeah, falsifying a police report is nothing.
Quote : | "its hard to place the blame solely with the police" |
imo, the police don't really carry much blame for their initial reaction in a heated moment....it's the attempted coverups that should warrant 0 tolerance.

We've dealt with this before in TSB. Police almost always lie when some big beating or murder happens. This is why the public looses faith in police forces.4/9/2009 6:07:31 PM |

And what fucking message would that be, you asshole and/or troll??? As I said, according to the witnesses, he never said or did anything to the fucking pigs, before, during, and after being hit and pushed, except for at the end where he is seen complaining in a broken voice to them while on the floor.4/9/2009 6:54:30 PM |

Did you watch the video? Seriously, something was either wrong with that guys brain, or he was trying to illicit action by the police. The dude was a dumbass, the police overreacted, and the protesters were idiots. I think blame can be shared between all three fairly equally. 4/9/2009 7:18:20 PM |

elicit
so if someone is literally/genuinely acting like a retard or as if they have brain damage, you beat them and push them to the ground? he posed NO threat, and that was VERY OBVIOUSLY CLEAR. he never looked or acted menacing or threatening.

compliance and non-resistance are NOT ways to deal with police officers. I don't see how they can make that any more clear then they have with these recent beatings and killings. It's that guy's fault for not being informed. 4/9/2009 7:27:20 PM |

The most you could pin on this cop is Assault/excessive force, and MAYBE involuntary manslaughter, although I doubt that would stick either.
He's not responsible for this guy's physical condition, which is probably what caused his heart attack.
