So...tires are done (nitto nt05), and I'm about to put on new brake pads (carbotech ax6), rotors (bendix, indeed $150 for all 4 shipped to my door), goodridge stainless braided brake hoses.
Next up will be seats. The stockers are even worse than their miserable reputation led me to believe. Thinking about Corbeau fx1, but I'm not sure if I can put a child seat in one, haha. Might have to go with Corbeau a4s. 1/26/2011 8:28:57 PM |

Also, I wonder how tough it would be to retrofit a C5 with the supposedly greatly improved stuff from the '08+ C6. Might could be done for just a few hundred bucks, depending on what's involved.

What is this you're referring to?
I think maybe I'd do another C5 z06 at some point, but I can honestly say my C5 was the one car that I don't miss in any way what so ever, interesting considering how much I appreciate power, power slides, a good exhaust tone and linear power delivery.
Also, True story #1: A few months ago saw a C6 in front of a trailer on the way to VIR. True story #2: Saw a C5 at the entrance to the trailer park in Cary by the intersection of Maynard and Chatham. True comment: The Corvettes are the only cars I've ever seen parked in front of a property that may be less valuable than said vehicle.
However, I do remember what that car made me think of every time I sat in it...

As far as the steering goes, supposedly the 2008+ C6s have significantly improved steering (tighter tolerances, etc). I need to find out a little more and see if it's just the rack that makes the difference or what...and then I need to figure out how tough it would be to put a C6 rack into a C5. My guess is that it could range from very easy to very difficult. If that's all that's needed, though, it would only cost a few hundred bucks. For that matter, I wonder how much better and how much more expensive a C6 ZR1 rack would be?

Will a child booster seat fit in one?

just come check mine out the next time you're in town. that should make up your mind easily or at least give you a solid point of reference. fwiw, one big reason i chose the a4's was to retain a recline function. iirc the fx1's are fixed. the a4's are definitely on the "mild" side in terms of bolstering compared to other aftermarket seats, but still a vast improvement over the stock seats and perfect for something that sees mixed use. even with fixed door bars, it's still pretty easy to get in/out of. 2/1/2011 5:27:00 PM |

yeah, I'm just not aware of any more aggressive seats that (a) fit and (b) don't cost more than I'm going to spend on a decade-old Chevy.
I'm thinking that the fixed back won't be a big deal...I mean, there's not really much room for seats to recline in a car like a Corvette, anyway. 2/1/2011 5:30:06 PM |

^that would be me too...I HATE being forced to drive in a reclined position. I don't see how all the hoodrats do it.
Low to the floor, legs slightly bent, steering wheel close, and seat all the way upright. Best control that way. 2/3/2011 6:26:45 PM |

^body proportions make a big difference. My wife says the way I set my seat makes her think I'm trying to look cool. I think it's actually pretty vertical, but it is closer to the pedals and more laid back than her position. We're both short, I'm only about 3 inches taller than her, but her hips are about an inch higher than mine. My arms are about 6-7 inches longer than hers though... It's weird. When I get in her car, I have to bring the seat forward, lay it back and move the wheel away from me. I think classic italian sportscar proportions would probably fit me, with the pedals relatively close and the wheel relatively further away than most cars today. Adjustable-position pedals would be nice in my next car... 2/6/2011 1:01:07 PM |

^ yeah my fiance' is 1" shorter than me but has a 37" inseam and 2" longer arms so i'm usually 1 click up from as far back as a seat can go and she's all the way ( i would be all the way back if i didn't like the better clutch control i get from one click forward.) 2/6/2011 6:28:03 PM |

So good story for you guys. Last night Ahmet and I were on our way back from dinner in Cary. He was nice enough to let me drive the slideways mobile. Anyways, we get off on Western and as we pull up to the stop light at Gorman we notice this corvette. Ahmet then notices it has the side vents, and lo and behold we have a C5 Z06.
We're in opposite lanes and stacked in traffic, but I let the cars in front of me get some room and pull past him at pretty damn close to the speed of sound. He does the same. As luck would have it the light changes red at the Avent Ferry intersection and we're in opposite lanes first in line at the stripe. I rev the beastly E36 engine at him 3-4 times and for some reason Ahmet is in the passenger seat laughing his ass off. I was ready to race for slips, and my co-driver isn't taking this seriously. The fat man from Kentucky in the Z06 doesn't even so much as blink at me...clearly scared. The light changes green he takes off and a moderate rate. I was nice enough to let him get half a length on me. Then I fucking gun it. I'm really surprised that he was able to keep his back bumper in front of the euro housed headlights on the precisely engineered sedan we're rolling in. Finally as I'm right in the meat of third gear and halfway to Pullen I blow past him. There may have been a car in front of him by now, but we were honestly going to fast to tell.
Ahmet seems to think that if the Z06 really wanted to he could have left us in the dust. Even if that was the case, he didn't have the "track tuned" awareness to realize his lane would shortly be clogged.
The really moral of this story is that there is indeed a replacement for displacement. It comes from a country a bit to the east. It's finely engineered, affordable, and most importantly...comes with four doors. 2/8/2011 8:33:56 PM |
