That's not really a bad schedule for the Chargers. If they can stay healthy and play up to their talent level, I could see a pretty realistic 11-12 wins. 4/15/2009 9:48:30 AM |

It's unfortunate that of their 4 primetime games, only 1 of them is at home. Maybe a late home game will get flexed.
The easy divisional games are balanced out by a tough non-divisional slate. Road games against the Steelers, Giants, Cowboys and Titans won't be easy. They better hope that the defense comes around with Merriman coming back. The question mark is on the defensive line, where they let Igor Olshansky walk and don't have an obvious replacement.
I have no doubt that Phil will keep the offense on track. He was the best QB in the league last season statistically. If LT can come back healthy, they should be alright. 4/15/2009 1:54:15 PM |

Jesus, the only good thing about that schedule is that they play in the AFC West. The out-of-division games are brutal. 4/15/2009 3:03:32 PM |

Out of Conference has some tough games but also some pretty easy ones.
I think they can handle Baltimore, Miami, Cleveland, Cincy, and Washington barring one of those teams being much better than they were last year.
The questionable ones will be Philly and the Cowboys, not sure if they'll be as explosive with off-season losses.
But yeah, Pitt, Tenn, and the Giants will be tough. 4/15/2009 4:38:10 PM |

Football Outsiders say the 2009 Chargers are the best team ever! (or at least have the best DVOA in the 6 years they have been doing their predictions)
They are the favorite to reach the Superbowl according to FBO.
Quote : | "CHARGERS SUMMARY 2008 Record: 8-8 Pythagorean Wins: 10.2 (7th) DVOA: 17.5% (7th) Offense: 24.1% (1st) Defense: 8.3% (20th) Special Teams: 1.7% (12th) Variance: 17.2% (17th) 2008: Disappointing Chargers still slip into playoffs after Denver implodes. 2009: Ridiculous Numbers vs. the Power of Norvalicious. 2009 Mean Projection: 12.5 wins
The San Diego Chargers are the prohibitive favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV. Our 2009 statistical projection for the Chargers is so off the charts that it may endanger the boundaries of reality. In the six years that Football Outsiders has been doing preseason team projections, only one team has had a projection this impressive: the 2007 New England Patriots. In fact, this year’s Chargers enter the season looking even stronger than the Patriots did two years ago. The 2007 Patriots averaged 33.5% DVOA and 12.1 wins in our 10,000 preseason simulations. This Chargers team averages 40.3% DVOA and 12.5 wins in the preseason simulations. *** In total, the package is awfully impressive. A powerful offense and a talented defense almost guaranteed to improve. We haven’t even mentioned the consistently good special teams or the schedule, one of the league’s ten easiest (according to average DVOA of opponent). Between the sidelines, it seems like a Chargers championship is inevitable. On the sidelines, however, stands the Force of Evitability. His name is Norv Turner." |

^Thats nuts.
It's not like they added anybody in free-agency. The only guy they signed was a special-teamer and nickel linebacker from Dallas named Kevin Burnett. And they drafted a backup OLB with their first round pick. There appear to be holes on both the offensive and defensive lines. And the team wasn't all that good last season, failing to stop anybody when the game was on the line. Merriman will help, but only if he's 100%.
I wonder why the Football Outsiders decided to overlook these flaws. 7/17/2009 2:41:34 AM |

It's an entirely objective rating system, they didn't overlook anything as far as I know.
I don't know the exact system but I've read about it before, it's significantly more complex and inclusive than any other projection system. It's like pomeroy ratings on steroids. It even takes into account luck (chargers had plenty of poor luck in games last year).
here's a smaller write up than the one I read a while back that explains it.

^^ The Charger should have been atleast 10-6 last year. The whole Ed Hoculi thing and the blown win against the Panthers to start the season. They were a much better team than 8-8 and somewhat proved it knocking out the Colts in the playoffs and then giving the Steelers a decent game in what was a basically unwinnable situation playing in Pittsburgh without LT.
Not saying I think they'll win the Super Bowl this year, but they do have a very good team overall. They really need Merriman to have a career year though which is unlikely. 7/17/2009 10:47:32 AM |

i ran around inside this Kansas City Chiefs bar in a Kansas City hotel casino screaming, by myself. i watched the entire game in a booth that said "Marcus Allen ate here". and Chiefs fans did the macarena every time they scored against the Patriots, just hours prior. 7/17/2009 11:21:02 AM |

I had been in upstate NY, and my dad, my mom, my sister, and I had just gotten off our plane back at charlotte douglas. There was a bar or whatever right next to the door we came out of and we saw a lot of people gathering (i hadnt checked the score on the plane but i figured they were watching the game). Literally walked over just in time to see the entire play. Couldn't have timed it better. I didnt even have time to look at the score or the time left because the play had started about the same time my eyes found the TV. I was happy we scored the TD and was cheering with everyone else.
Then I noticed the celebration seemed larger than just a TD as Fox was running onto the field...at that time I looked at the score and time on the clock and was like

i know that after all the phone calls, we went on a beer run (in our jerseys) and saw someone with a jake jersey. we didn't have to say a thing, the thumbs up said it all

Quote : | "SAN DIEGO (AP) -- San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was arrested Sunday and accused of choking and restraining his girlfriend, reality TV star Tila Tequila, as she tried to leave his Southern California home.
Tequila, 27, signed a citizen's arrest warrant, charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Gary Steadman said.
Deputies responded about 3:45 a.m. to Merriman's house in Poway, north of San Diego, after a woman called to say she was choked by the player and physically restrained when she had tried to leave, according to a Sheriff's Department statement.
Merriman, 25, was taken into custody. Authorities declined to say whether he had posted bail or been released, pending an afternoon news conference.
Tequila was taken to a hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.
Tequila, whose real name is Tila Nguyen, is best known for A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila, which ran for two seasons on MTV. The bisexual dating show featured men and women vying for Tequila's affections. She has also modeled for Playboy and other men's magazines.
Scott E. Leemon, an attorney for Tequila, said in a statement that neither she nor her representatives would comment publicly on the incident.
Merriman's agent, Tom Condon, said he hadn't heard about the arrest when contacted by The Associated Press.
Chargers general manager A.J. Smith didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
Merriman was the 12th overall pick out of the University of Maryland in the 2005 draft, and had 39.5 sacks in his first three years. The three-time Pro Bowl selection was getting back into shape after missing nearly all of last season with a knee injury. He played little during pre-season games. The Chargers' season begins a week from Monday night at Oakland.
Smith often speaks of signing "character" players, yet the Chargers have had their share of off-field problems in recent seasons.
In 2006, there were seven run-ins with the law by San Diego players, including linebacker Steve Foley's shooting by an off-duty police officer who suspected him of drunken driving.
Merriman was suspended four games for testing positive for steroids in 2006, and linebacker Stephen Cooper was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the 2008 season after testing positive for a banned stimulant." |

Merriman's quote:
Quote : | ""On September 6, 2009 the San Diego Sheriff's Department responded to a citizen's complaint that was initiated by Tila Nguyen (aka Tila Tequila). I was taken into custody based upon that complaint. At the time, I was concerned about her welfare given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided.
"We would all do our best to help a friend if we considered their actions to be detrimental to their personal safety. I in no way caused any harm to Ms. Nguyen, however, paramedics were called and she was examined but no injuries were reported. She was released and has since returned to Los Angeles, California.
"There have been no charges filed against me. I want to thank the San Diego Sheriff's Department for their professionalism. I will continue to cooperate fully with the Department, and I look forward to clearing my name regarding these false allegations. I want to put this behind me so I can continue to focus on a successful season for the San Diego Chargers."" |

Here we go with the pre-season hype.
Cnnsi.com picks http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/09/07/crystal.ball1/index.html :
- Chargers picked by 4 out of the 9 experts to win the Super Bowl
- Rivers picked by one expert to be MVP
Espn.com picks http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/preview09/news/story?id=4424374 :
- 4 of 16 experts pick San Diego as Super Bowl Champs
- 3 experts pick Rivers as MVP
Then Trent Dilfer breaks down the QBs. Has Rivers in group with Brees as the two QBs behind Manning and Brady with only a ring separating them. Pretty good praise: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/preview09/columns/story?columnist=dilfer_trent&id=4436281
Quote : | "2. Philip Rivers, San Diego
Analysis: Demonstrative, animated, tough, outspoken, fiery and hypercompetitive … consistently makes the most difficult throws in the NFL and it's not even close … one of very few quarterbacks who could flourish in Chargers-style system favoring throws 15-25 yards downfield (as opposed to slants, checkdowns and soft-spot zone plays) … remarkable efficiency considering how many high-risk throws he must make in game." |
