Can anybody recommend a virtual server host? Currently we're on Virpus but their network has gone out more times than we can count. I've already lost one customer due to this issue. 4/16/2009 7:48:44 AM |

<3 linode

I've never had a single problem with them, and when I've had to interact with their support they've been helpful and laid back. They moved from UML to Xen last year, and they're constantly upgrading and adding services to my account for free as they grow. 4/16/2009 11:46:38 AM |

My BIG concern is stability and uptime, right now the owner is leaning towards GoDaddy, I'd have to propose a STRONG argument to lean away from them.
SliceHost has a shot, but I've never heard of Linode.com and I doubt the owner has too. 4/17/2009 9:19:46 AM |

I started my linode server in mid january. I've never seen it overloaded or down. It just works, and works very well. Highly recommended. 4/17/2009 11:00:42 AM |

notoriety does not always equal better service.
i'd stay away from godaddy, i've heard complaints from multiple people about various aspects of their service.
the only times my linode has been off were when i actually turned it off. it works, it works well, and i've literally never had any problems whatsoever with it. i don't think you'll find anyone who has anything bad to say about them.
also, whenever i've had a question, their support team was always able to answer it more than adequately and also responded to my question typically in an hour or two.
i have (and will continue to be) thoroughly impressed with them. i've been a client for a little over two years now.]4/17/2009 1:48:05 PM |

The only time my linode has ever gone down is when they migrated it from UML to xen. That was maybe 4 hours, and required nothing on my part. Evan's post made me go look, and I'll actually have been using them for exactly two years tomorrow. 4/17/2009 3:11:25 PM |

i just got this email from dreamhost trying to get me to go their Private Server:
Quote : | " Last week we sent you an email inviting you to try our still-new DreamHost PS (Private Servers) and/or our DreamHost PS MySQL service! It looks like you never checked it out at:
http://www.dreamhostps.com/
Nor did you choose to sign up by visiting:
https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=vserver.provision
We can understand if you're perhaps not interested at this time.. it's true the minimum extra monthly charge is $15 (for 150MB of resources).
But... what if we gave you $5 a month off... forever? What THEN?
Well, what if is what NOW... if you sign up in the next week (by 2009-04-22), you'll automatically get a 150MB DreamHost PS server for just $10/month... forever! That's 33% off (give or take .3333333333333333333333333...%)!
The main advantages of DreamHost PS are:
* You get your own PROTECTED system resources for improved stability. * You get more flexibility than regular hosting to run any process. * You can scale your resources on the fly, and reboot your own PS. * It's currently only +$10/month for every 100MB of memory. ($5 off!) * It's a completely seamless transition from our regular shared hosting.
You can also sign up for DreamHost PS MySQL, which is just like PS but for your databases. If you get both PS and PS MySQL, you get another 20% off both, forever!
Sign up now and we'll be able to provision you ASAP!
Thanks once more, The Happy DreamHost Evite Team! " |

Alright, got the owner to stop thinking about GoDaddy.
Now the race is on for http://slicehost.com, http://www.crocker.com/products/webhosting.html, and http://www.linode.com/.
We shall see who wins. 4/22/2009 12:16:09 PM |

lol who the hell is crocker?
he went with a no-name provider in the beginning (Virpus or whatever) and got screwed - don't make the same mistake twice.
also, complete LOL at their prices - $20/mo for 250MB of storage?
also also, you get WAY more for your money with linode compared to slicehost, and their support/reliability is better.] 4/23/2009 12:39:28 PM |

I've never done anything with godaddy's hosting, but their SSL certs and domain registration are both pretty good and pretty cheap. Their support is fantastic. 4/23/2009 12:45:51 PM |
