If you thought Congressman Bachus was kicking it old school when he claimed to have a list of 17 confirmed Socialists serving in the Congress, then you apparently haven't seen Texas Governor Rick Perry lately, who is apparently threatening to go all 1861 on our asses.

Quote :
"Gov. Rick Perry refused to back away Thursday from his words of empathy for secessionists, even as Democratic lawmakers questioned whether he was encouraging political extremists.

"We have a great union," Perry said after a ceremony where he signed the first law approved in this year's legislative session. But, with federal financial bailouts and an explosion in federal spending, he added, "I understand how someone could feel that way" about Texas leaving the U.S.

That followed Perry's comments to reporters at a "tea party" in Austin on Wednesday that he believes Texas had the legal authority – by virtue of being a country when it joined the union in 1845 – to secede from the union.

"My hope is that America, and Washington in particular, pays attention. We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, who knows what might come out of that?" the governor said Wednesday."

Idle threat.

I wish he meant it. If I thought he did, I'd be moving to Texas right now.

If at first you don't secede, try try again.

I'm not condoning the Democrats "Big Spending" but cut me a fucking break republicans with all the fucking drama. If anything California and the other traditional blue/liberal states had much more reason to threaten succession and encourage extremeists during the 8 year political black hole circus. Perhaps republicans should look in the mirror as to the reason behind all this big spending since it their failed policies of the last 8 years are what led to such a huge and liberal leftist backlash on the political scene.

oh no's could you imagine losing such successful, wealthy, and influential red states such as Kanasa, mississippi, arkansas, and Utah if some of them actually succeeded LOL

About the only state i'd really be upset about is Alaska with all the oil and SC.

Secession does not require hatred of America. For some folks it may include that, but really all it means is that a state thinks it is not in its best interest to be a part of the union any more.

Although it's probably many years down the road, I can see the country splitting apart in another economic showdown like the Civil War.

You will have a socialist welfare state on one side that will destroy itself just like soviet Russia. And, on the other side, a hard-right fundamentalist theocracy whose intolerance will make Iran look like San Francisco.

We're not that far gone yet. Texas needs to cool its jets and try to fix what we've got.

For what its worth (probably nothing) i read somewhere that a far more plausable event would be for texas to divide into up to 5 states. This would increase the number of hard core right wingers it sent to the senate from 2 to as many as 10.

I'll look for the link.

I've certainly never said that. Putting country first is stupid. But that is a very valid rebuke of Bush-lovers that have supposedly discovered a conscience in < 3 months.

I didn't participate in the tea parties because I knew full-well that 90% of the folks there are part of the problem, and not the solution. All those idiots protesting will line up to bring the next guy who will be just as horrendous as Obama, but with a Republican twist. Anybody who voted for Bush or McCain has no credibility to talk about secession due to big government.

New Hampshire will do it well before Texas.

Perry: This is interesting that this has really kind of bubbled up, to uh... I refer people back to my statement, and I gotta a charge out of it. I was kinda thinking that, maybe the same people who hadn't been reading the constitution right were reading that article and they got the wrong impression about what I said.

Clearly, I stated that we have a great union. And Texas is part of a great union. I see no reason for that to change. I think that may not be the exact quote, but that is, in essence what I said.

Other than realizing he sounded like a crazy person, and maybe reading a textbook about what happened last time other crazy people tried to secede, this probably helped

Except for when a democrat/liberal is president.

Quote :
"You will have a socialist welfare state on one side that will destroy itself just like soviet Russia. And, on the other side, a hard-right fundamentalist theocracy whose intolerance will make Iran look like San Francisco."

I would not go as far as destroying itself but it will definitely be worse off for hard working professional class americans to
have to subsidize countless generations of slob lazy fat gov't leeches.

America needs its Red and Blue. The blue states need help in curving their spend crazy and over the top hippy policies. The red
states need the blue states to keep a lid on the ridiculous evangelical agenda and for some altruism to not solely degenerate into
an aristocracy with a "let them eat cake" attitude.

Kinda Ironic though that the republicans who are the ones that invaded the south to keep the union together in the 1860's are the ones
speaking of state's rights to succeed as they have slowly become the prevalent party.

CHUCK NORRIS - NORRIS VOLUNTEERS TO LEAD TEXAS REVOLUTION

Martial-arts master CHUCK NORRIS has his sights set on becoming more than a Texas Ranger - he has volunteered to run as the U.S. state's first president.

Norris, who played TV hardman Cordell Walker in hit series Walker, Texas Ranger, has put himself up for the job of running the region after discussing the possibility of the state seceding from U.S. control during a rant on CNN.com's political blog.

The actor, who is a staunch Republican, insists Texans want an independent state after being let down by the American government - and thinks he'd be the ideal candidate to lead the Lone Star state's revolution.

He says, "I may run for president of Texas. That need may be a reality sooner than we think. If not me, someone someday may again be running for president of the Lone Star state, if the state of the union continues to turn into the enemy of the state.

"Anyone who has been around Texas for any length of time knows exactly what we'd do if the going got rough in America."

lol, treason against whom? He is not threatening anyone.

According to the U.S. Constitution:

Quote :
"Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."

He is not advocating war against the United States. He (at most) is advocating peaceful disassociation from the Union. It is not a rebellion. It is abandonment.

He doesn't want to topple the government in D.C. - that is treason.

Walking away in-line with the rights of a free people is not treason. If the union were to attack to force them back in the union - self-defense is justified and still does not amount to treason, as there is no desire to attack or subdue the rest of the states, only to have independence recognized.

It is mind-boggling to me that those like the Great Enslaver talk about a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.....unless the people want to govern themselves...then that's treason.

"As you know, Texas is now talking about seceding from the Union. Tom Delay, the former House Majority Leader who lost his job after being exposed as a criminal, is suggesting that Texas split into five separate states (which he says Texas is permitted to do), and then Democrats in Washington would be so incensed by the notion of ten new Texas Senators coming to DC that they'd kick Texas out of the Union.

My friend Chris has a great idea. Let's welcome dividing Texas up. It will be the biggest gerrymander in the history of the country. And along those lines, what should we call the five new Texas states, or five new Texas countries? What do you think? Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments, but you have to register with a real email address (it's the only way to stop the crazies, sorry).

More from Chris:

You know, the weird thing is that Delay’s right about Texas having joined the Union with permission to divide itself into as many as five states if it chose to do so.

I actually wouldn’t have a problem with it – but oh the games one could play with drawing the boundaries. It could be the most epic gerrymander in history. The area around Austin could potentially be a liberal Nirvana.

And, honestly, one of the biggest barriers to statehood for D.C. and Puerto Rico has been the fact that we’ve been stuck on a round number of states for 50 years. LOL.

So, what the heck? Let’s split Texas into five states (West Louisiana, South Oklahoma, East New Mexico, Nirvana, and Hell – the last of which would be Houston or wherever Tom Delay is living at the time).

And actually, that suggests the idea of a naming contest for the five Balkanized states of the former Republic of Texas.

So that gets us to 54. Then we could add Puerto Rico, D.C., the Virgin Islands, the Northern Marianas, American Samoa and Guam.

Which puts us at 60 – another nice round number that will make us feel all warm and fuzzy again.

Palau, of course, is completely screwed in this scenario, since they’d be 61, but if you want to make an omelet…."

We should just rename the USA as NCAA

and we could group states into conferences.

And if Texas wants to go and be an independent, then they can be a has-been like Notre Dame.

I don't have time right now to come up with lots more clever parallels, but i'm sure y'all can take it from here.
