Thinking about buying the body only...and was wondering if anyone had a lens they wanted to get rid of. the standard 52mm one would be fine.

I don't mean to foil your purchase because the D40x is a great camera if you're a casual photo taker. However, it doesn't have the screw motor for non-G series lenses. Arguably the most versatile and best lens/$ on the market is the Nikon 50mm prime and you need a screw motor for it to focus. I would look into a D80, used D200, or a D70s on the cheap side. All a great bodies, all have screw motors.

There's also a disparity on supported external flashes in the D40/40x/60 lines. The bodies don't have the IR master trigger for use with remote flash triggering. Nor do they have the IR trigger sensor. The remote IR trigger can be had on eBay for $10 for family photos and such.

Also save yourself a lot of headache and get it from a reputable retailer. Peace in Raleigh is great if you like to deal locally, B&H and Adorama rule the online wares. Forget about Craigslist & eBay unless you're absolutely sure it's got low actuations and was well taken care of. You can also check the classifieds at dGrin (http://www.dgrin.com) and Nikonians (http://www.nikonians.com). Most of their users have class, and take awesome care of their gear.

[EDIT: We own a D40 and it's a great camera... but it was for my mom really. It's something that we can have a high probability of getting great shots out of, and near 100% probability that we can save it in Photoshop. The same definitely cannot be said of most P&S.]

i own a d40, been pretty happy with it. first time owning a DSLR camera, so i didn't want to buy high-end. this past weekend, i picked up a lens from the Wolf Camera in Cary Towne Center, fairly decently priced. they've got a couple of lenses that will fit the d40.
