He has caught her playing it three times in the past week, and I've seen her playing it twice He's leaving it up to me to take care of the situation.

She's 29, single, no kids, overweight, and tries to dress like a sorority chick. And she wears Crocs on Fridays.

We both don't like her.

Should I fire her, or just give her a stern warning?

fire her

if this was the first time, maybe the second time, I'd say give her a warning. 3 times in 1 week clearly shows she doesn't give a shit

She's a secretary. It's not like she does any real work anyways.

When we have meetings she'll set up the conference room and order lunch. Half the time she can't get the projector to turn on and often messed up our lunch orders.

I feel like being an asshole, especially to a woman. My former future wife cheated on me and broke up with me, so I'm just now getting out of the denial/depression stage and am becoming angry.

She's about 160 if I had to guess. Has thunder thighs and serious muffintop issues.

what else is she supposed to do? if there is no work then why does the manager care what she does?
it seems like he is jealous that she has free time, but my other question is did he confront he when he saw her playing?

I have a job like this: 6hrs of real work, with almost all the work in the first and last 15 minutes (on my regular shift, at least. My recent shifts are an entirely different story). I play lots of games and read lots of blogs and study a lot

It's not the solitaire that's making me vote for firing. It's this:

Quote :
"When we have meetings she'll set up the conference room and order lunch. Half the time she can't get the projector to turn on and often messed up our lunch orders.

"

The bar is not high. She's not even trying to meet expectations.

Well, as we've seen with the djeternal saga, you're going to have to warn her that the next time will be her last, and maybe even send a blanket warning to the rest of the company so that she'd have a hard time with the "they fired me because they don't like me" angle. I guess she's already been warned though, since she's been caught a total of 5 times already?

I would warn her about the solitaire, and then make sure she learns how to use the projector and what ever other issues you/the company has with her

if there really isnt a whole lot of work to do:

1. you catch her again, fire her
2. hire a hot bitch
3. fuck said hot bitch
4. past relationship emotions neutralized

if there is work to do but shes just a lazy fat ass:

1. you catch her again, fire her
2. hire a hot bitch
3. fuck said hot bitch
4. past relationship emotions neutralized

Our generation R&D team has a smokin' secretary. I think they secretly mock us. My boss has said repeatedly that we need to beef up the competition, and this might be our ticket.

eh, i'd let it go as long as she's getting her work done.

but i've (unfortunately) come to share the same work ethic as the guy on office space. its not that i'm lazy, i just don't care.

If your boss documented his coaching/counseling/whateverthefuckyourcompanycallstellingsomeonetogettheirshitstraight, then fire her.

If not, then you coach/counsel/whateverthefuckyourcompanycallstellingsomeonetogettheirshitstraight, document it, and then fire her next time.

Also, "My former future wife cheated on me and broke up with me": Sorry, bro

i once worked as a secretary/receptionist for a moving company in raleigh and i spent much of my day playing games or reading. i did get A TON of work done though. the little old ladies in the office would give me papers to copy, fax, file, and so on and what would normally take them 30 minutes would take me 5. i turned that office around in the short time i was there and i read more newsweek than i ever had in my life.

From my understanding, the boss found out about djeternal and his woman sending scandalous IMs to each other while working and using social websites like Facebook and TWW. She documented all of this with some kind of NetNanny and used it as an official reason to fire him. Word on the street was she was jealous of the interoffice relationship.

However, djeternal didn't feel he was warned about this (official reason) and went to the 'wrongful job termination' people to put a case against her. As far as I know he's collecting unemployment and causing a lot of legal trouble to his former boss and company.

Plus, the reason for the blanket warning was that djeternal had proof that other workers used social websites while working, a fact he was using to pursue an 'unfair treatment' angle on the case.

you have to have formal documentation and a history of past occurances - otherwise she'll get the company for unemployment. Fire her, but do it the right way.

can't the games just be removed? none of my computers at work have any games

It looks bad for our group if an executive or customer walks by our area and sees her goofing off by playing one of the most easily-identifiable games in the history of computers.

But if we're paying her salary then we can expect her to do something productive with her time rather than wasting it. If she were reading CNN, a Newsweek, or doing just about anything else, I doubt we'd have a problem with it.

My boss kept a log of everything. When she saw him she immediately closed it, so she knew she shouldn't be doing it.

I agree, as long as she has done all of her work and there is nothing waiting on her then let it go, not a big deal. Clients shouldnt be able to see her screen to begin with.

I wouldn't fire her for playing solitaire, not if she is accomplishing everything else she has been assigned.

These seem like pretty basic tasks. In this job market, I think I'd make sure I could at least accurately transcribe victual requests on paper and operate basic office equipment before I fucked around on the job.
