Have any of you guys ever done this? What were your experiences?
I'm trying to find a nice suit to get for my wedding (and will probably get matching suits for the groomsmen) and I've seen that you can get some nice stuff online but I'm a bit nervous about it, seeing as you can't try it on first.
This store on Ebay seems to have a lot of good stuff:
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/The-Wizard-of-Aahs__W0QQ_armrsZ1
and there are plenty of other places on Ebay that seem legit. I'm mostly nervous about the quality of the material and then having them sized properly for alterations.
For example, my jacket size is 40 and pants are 32. For the site above for a jacket size 40 the pants are size 34 +2 extra for alteration. Does this mean the pants are actually 36? I couldn't alter from 36 to 32...
Let me know if any of you have any recommendations for sellers or online stores or anything for this. Thanks! 5/19/2009 1:34:22 PM |

Pants and jackets come within a range of one another. typically this is about 5 - 6" so your fitting size seems to be a little off the mark, but i suppose its better that you're bigger in the chest than in the waist.
I don't know what the deal is with that 34 +2, but if this place adheres to the standard then the pants that come with a 40" jacket would be 34, and could easily be worked down to a 32. But the 34 +2 format is different to me.
I wouldn't buy a suit online, period. I don't care if the vendor was brooks brothers or j. crew, but definitely not ebay. All italian wools are not crated equal, nor is any other material. seeing the material is essential. plus its hard to get a good feel for the cut when ordering online. are you looking for a more modern, or traditional cut? how does the cut lay on you in particular? These are questions to which you need to know the answers and should thus deal with a reputable tailor.
i know of this thai lady who does suits from scratch for prices that would match those on the site above. Given that you don't have standard fittings it may be best for you to have a custom made suit instead of having something tailored down, that is, if you're looking for the best fit. If I can find her information I'll PM you with it.
but, traditionally groomsmen pay for their own suiting, so it may be best to have them rent a tux if that is the plan. i really like my closet friends but i hate paying large sums of money for their weddings. if you're paying for it, you're a better friend than most and perhaps we should be close.

if you're going to go the online route, be sure there is a reasonable return policy and order way way in advance so you have time to return and find something else if it doesnt work out 5/19/2009 1:46:31 PM |

what is a good summer suit color?
I have several events that need suits this summer and i dont want to wear a standard black suit, but i also don't want to stand out more than need be.
what colors should i look into? 5/19/2009 1:53:07 PM |
IRSeriousCat All American 6092 Posts user info edit post |
depends on what type of person you are, and what type of weddings/events.
if you want something ubiquitous i would go with a charcoal gray, two button with no pleats. If you're than 5'10 I would maybe throw a vest on because you could pull it off.
charcoal is great because you can use any shirt or tie color, for the most part. black has its limits.
seersucker is a great way to go for the may - august weddings and outdoor events. always appreciated and you will stand out every time, but stick with the blue one. with the other colors its clear you're just trying too hard. 5/19/2009 1:56:45 PM |

does the mens warehouse cater to modern/slim cut suiting? I haven't bought a suit in years, but the last time i got one through them they seemed to just want to stick with the traditional full cut boxy look. I want something more contemporary, and they are having a sale.
Should i look elsewear?

its hard to find something that doesn't even have pleats at the men's wearhouse. the likelihood of finding a slim/modern look there is between zero and none. 5/19/2009 2:16:38 PM |

Given this is your wedding, you can rent suits, though the selection is much more limited than Tuxedo's.
For any other situation, normally I would say try GoodWill. Seriously. $10 for a suit that normally costs $400-$500. Get it adjusted thereafter. 5/20/2009 9:31:22 AM |

Thanks for all the info everyone.
^ Up until now all the suits I have are from Goodwill, and I've found some pretty decent ones. I'm using the wedding as an excuse to finally buy a nice suit.
IRSeriousCat, I would love to have that person's info. I was initially wanted to do something like this but I figured this was only in big cities or Asia, etc.
Everytime I have gone to the mall to look at suits, the cheaper ones ($300 or less) just feel so crappy and they look pretty cheap. The nicer ones (Nordstroms) are just way out of my spending limit for clothes. Any more advice is appreciated. 5/20/2009 11:32:37 AM |
