So what's the cheapest used car you can find with adaptive cruise control (car slows itself). Charlotte traffic is getting old. I'm thinking a LS430 for M35? I also drive 60 miles a day so tend to lend Japanese. Ideally I could just in the car, push a button and steer when on the interstate. My Dad has got a M45 with the cruise and seems to work well enough. It will bring the car to a near hault.

Thoughts?

Not used, but I think this will be the cheapest on the market. Might be comparable to the used models mentioned at around $35k.

[Edited on May 27, 2009 at 5:38 PM. Reason : Apparently the IS can be equipped with it, so you might be able to find a used model even cheaper]

I had it on an FX and hated it.... if someone came into my lane 100 feet ahead of me going 10 mph faster, it would slow down, lock on them, then speed up. I never used it. It had the lane awareness thing too that was annoying as fuck.

I mean I guess it's cool if your feet don't work or regular cruise control doesn't cut it, but I wouldn't base a decision on the adaptive cc alone.

I love driving, but some days I just want to sit on my ass and float home. That sucks about the FX, I thought the old man's M45 had a pretty good system. You can just set the distance etc.

I believe the current IS250's have that technology available as an option.

In fact here:

http://www.webwombat.com.au/motoring/news_reports/lexus-is250-review.htm

Quote :
"The laser cruise control is a development of the system from the LS and G, and again it's been developed further. While I criticised the LS's overcautious distancing, which allowed other drivers to dive in front, the IS's system is much more advanced, and allows you to track other cars at a much shorter distance. The system also works in the rain (previously it cancelled when the wipers were engaged).

If anything, one criticism of the cruise control system is that you can't turn it off. Sounds silly, I know, but when you're negotiating a busy motorway, for instance, it's impossible to “loom up” on cars. This means that, where before you could announce your arrival behind ignorant right-lane hogs by looming behind them, the laser system won't allow it without manual overriding. This means that, more often that not, you actually have the cruise control disengaged, which cancels the point of having cruise control altogether."

You can go online and price the option with a IS250 on the Lexus website.

Gah, I looked it up for you:

Pre-Collision System [23] (PCS) and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control [24] (automatic transmission only) $2,850. I guess you could add just that option to a base IS250, totaling to $35,325MSRP before destination fee. The biggest challenge would be getting one with just that option. Apparently Lexus is really anal about ordering "one of a kind" shit because they wouldn't let me order a base 2009 IS350 with just the adaptive head lights. I had to package it with the preferred package and some other bullshit (I verified this at multiple dealerships ).

Eh that's a little more than I'm looking to spend. I actually liked the idea of a bigger car too. I've been driving a 07 G35 sedan (new style) and kinda want something a little bigger. The last generation LS's seem to be depreciating nicely.

Should have mentioned I had it on an 05 FX, the first year it came out, so it may have changed. There were three distances (I think) you could set it at. Just seemed like I was messing with it all the time and it wasn't real smooth when it slowed down - it felt like the cruise just shut off all together.

So move closer to work.

I would guess that with the money you save on gas and on not having a high car payment you could easily boost your rent/mortgage to find some place that you wouldn't mind living in about 15 minutes from work. Might have to wait til the housing market improves (if you own a house and would have to sell) but you'd probably enjoy not sitting in traffic for 90-120 minutes each day.

RaggedBack's posts are CIA level DaVinci code shit, tough to decipher. There's only 2 or 3 people in the entire world that knows what the fuck he's talking about.

I've gotten too good of a deal on the water to move closer, trust me. My commute is typically 40-50 minutes. No payments either, I want to buy the next one with cash.

About the Impalas...I like the new Malibus. Why did it take so long for Chevy to build a decent looking car? On the other hand, I think I've sworn off buying GM because they're currently burning through tax dollars and are still going bankrupt.

Anyways, I know the old LS400s will run forerver. So I'd imagine the LS430 would also. These big cars get about the same mileage as the G35 anyway...so not too worried about that. I don't want a IS250, the girlfriend has one.

So the list is:
Infiniti M35
Lexus LS430 GS350/300?
Mercedes E class, have they made a recent CDI with cruise...but I think I want to steer away from Mercedes
BMW?

There are some new Volvos have it, so it wouldn't surprise me if some older ones did as well.

Then again, my father got a speeding ticket because of his car's adaptive cruise control, so watch out for that.

If everyone uses that kind of crazy logic they might as well close shop tomorrow.

The Lexus is probably your best bet.

Well it's a combination of getting a 01 Z71 Silverado that fell apart, not liking unions and Obama's give outs, but yea. I guess in a perfect world we would all drive bombed out Integras.

lol, didn't you get the memo I upgraded?

The new Malibu is a fantastic car, so your reasoning sucks. If you think GM is failing b/c they don't make any good cars then you haven't been paying attention at all. Is the perception about their cars bad? Yes. Do they make some bad cars? Yes. Do they make good cars too? Yes.

A bad experience with your Z71 I can understand. But you didn't say anything about that in your original argument points.

I believe some of the newer model Audi A4s and A6s have it...but I'm not sure on the "cheap" part.

I don't know if I'd call it "fantastic." Don't get me wrong, I love the new Z06 etc, But GM sucks ass for so many reasons....but let's not get into it.

What are you driving now?

Anybody in here have an A6 with it? Or anybody tried it?

I've got a shiny red '07 S2000, though I've still got the GS-R...for now (haven't driven it in over a month).

Can you change your work schedule at all? I know some people shift to 7-4 to avoid traffic. I work 8-5, but go to a gym right by my office after work most days. When I leave the gym the worst I-40 has to offer has usually subsided by then.

Nah, it really won't get much better. I'm in the office by 7:15-7:30 and leave after 5:30 anyway. I actually miss the biggest swells of congestion. I'm waiting till the end of summer to start classes again (if I want to go back) because I want to make the most of the nice weather. They're flexible, but I spend a lot of time talking to people on the West coast and it'd be counter productive if I was leaving by 4. I can typically go wakeboard for almost a couple hours after work right now anyways.

S2000's are cool, at least the right wheels are pushing it. I've got a buddy who picked one up for a really good deal if I remember right. Not the car for me though.

According to Wikipedia, Lexus began offering it in 2000. Not sure how good those early ones are, I'll have to do some test drives.
