cool concept, and would probably be fun for some things, but here are the issues I have:
1. Much like the wii, it would probably get old before too long. 2. things like changing tires during a racing game? c'mon. really? 3. who has that much room to move around for kicks and shit in their room? 6/2/2009 12:53:21 PM |

b) fucking vaporware shit
I mean... what the fuck is this anyways?
break down? it's a fucking video that shows people doing shit in front of a tv
nothing more
no attachments on the people no direct interface devices... just people in front of the console
complete nonsense
...
and why are people calling this a "demo"... this isn't a demo... this is a fucking... nothing... it's like calling "the matrix" a demo for future human computer interfaces... whatever

Sega did it.
Seriously though, it does look pretty cool. I'm definitely skeptical at this point though. I don't want to fall into the "Wii" trap again where I'm thinking, "hey this is really cool, different and fun," then I finally come to the realization that I'm playing a very simple game with an incredibly imprecise controller.

I'm super skeptical. The kind of stuff they are doing in the previews for it are the same type of things that Nintendo had in their Wii trailers three years ago, and we are still yet to get a lot of stuff like that. Until I read some reviews, I'm not gonna believe that it truly has 1:1 motion capture. 6/2/2009 2:10:09 PM |

The company that Microsoft bought for Project Natal demoed the device in January of '08 for Ars Technica and they were impressed then. So why in the hell wouldn't the project be even more solidified a year and a half later?

Not trying to troll here but I am extremely disappointed in the PS3. I've had one for quite sometime now and in the last 6-7 months I haven't turned it on once. The only time its been on is so that my friend can plug his blackberry in to the USB port to charge since he doesn't have a wall-charger. I've been checking online frequently though for any games that might grab my attention and I have yet to find one except for the cross-platform games that I already have on xbox. Also i've stopped even watching blu-ray movies because I just stream from netflix (although not always in HD and not in the same quality either) or I rent/buy HD movies on AppleTV. The only reason I really have a PS3 is for movies and even thats lost its appeal because I'd rather just have everything on a hard drive.
so...that said i didn't see what sony presented at E3...anything interesting?

A handful of games and what is essentially a tech demo of their version of the Wiimote.
Meanwhile:
Quote : | "One interesting thing that came up in the demo is that when a woman stepped up to use it, the system recognized she was female and represented her on-screen as a female avatar with long hair. Tsunoda said that ideally, Natal will recognize users and be able to grab their existing Xbox avatars, but that in such a demo environment, it simply represented her the best way it could, given what it could see of her skeletal structure.
Another interesting point was the way Natal recognizes people's skeletal structure and analyzes how we move. Tsunoda made the point that Natal will continue to work even if someone walks in front of a player because it knows how the human body works. So, if a player had his or her arms blocked, but Natal's cameras could still see part of their arm, it can fill in the rest based on algorithms that tell it how that arm should look. " |
That's pretty damn cool.6/3/2009 11:49:02 AM |

I would think that MS could make a handheld remote to work with the camera if they wanted it to be uber-precise with swords or guns like the Wii or PS3 will be.
However, the Wii and PS3 are not going to be able to do what Natal will as far as full body mocap.
We will see though, the reports I am reading from people who demoed it at E3 are pretty good. A release timeframe would have been nice.
Cool thought:

microsoft and sony's demos looked leaps and bounds above the wii
sony has buttons and arm/wrist movement translation, didn't see anything indicating it tracks body position or movement, but at least it had a real tech demo
microsoft has leg and body movement translation + voice command, i'm uncertain how well the skeleton tracking works across the board, but seems promising 6/3/2009 5:10:52 PM |

I read today, I believe on Engadget, that during a demo the processing model was shown to them and showed that 48 body joints were being tracked in the skeletal frame (kind of explains how they are able to recognize such minute movements). One demo showed how the Natal software had no trouble tracking one body while another came into the picture dragging a chair and sitting in it (it understood exactly what was going on). At work we each came across a total of 5 live demos from major blogs that said, without a doubt, the tech was incredibly accurate. Also, it was said that a full SDK for Natal was already in the hands of developers.6/3/2009 11:48:06 PM |

What does everyone expect the price point to be?
I expect a base Natal accessory with just a few minigames for around $150, and a bundle with a couple of games for $200.
Also one bundled with the system of course.

I am fucking impressed. Seriously. Milo will probably disappoint, but the rest looks legit.
Here's an idea:
why not include a headtracking in-game "camera" for first person games? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw
This would be a developer thing of course. So easy with what they already have.
oh, and the jab at the wii, letting you sit on the couch with "some preset waggle motion" is spot on. I always hated how you didn't really have to move much with the wii mote. This is different.

the wii still serves a purpose, there are plenty of games that are more fun to play on the wiimote than a controller, but will not translate well to full body motion. Also, for me, id only want the full body motion for games where I will probably be playing by myself fully emerged in the game. If I am hanging out with my friends and turning to talk to them, drinking etc. while playing the games, its not going to work too well with full body tracking. This still looks cool and im interested to hear more about it, but they both serve different purposes for sure. 6/4/2009 7:53:17 AM |
