I am thinking about selling my mothers old laptop, I want to know if it worth the time to get it cleaned up or if I should just pull the hard drive and donate it somewhere. So, what do you think I can get for the following.
Sony PCG-SR17 Vio Notebook
Pentium III 700 MHz processor Windows Millenium edition 192MB RAM 20 GB Hard disk 10.4 XGA TFT Screen
Also comes with wireless card and seperate CD rewritable drive.
The thing is less than 3 pounds and 1" thick, I think it wouls be a great netbook for someone (thats all my mom used it for anyway).
So what do yall think I can sell it for (on craigslist not the cheapskates here)? 6/7/2009 11:36:01 AM |

I gave $20 for one with identical specs last month. If the battery works in yours I'll go $30.

40-50 dollar bucks.
I suppose it also depends on how good the screen looks as well. If it's kind of assy looking and has a poor viewing angle, then maybe subtract $10. Subtract another $5-10 if it has any major damage to the laptop's housing.

i've sold my fair share of crappy, outdated computer equipment on craigslist for more than they're worth
that said, i think that you'd be hard-pressed to get $100 for it...i'd say $75, tops, if you're good at making it sound like a netbook (i don't condone lying, of course, but you can spin the specs and emphasize the size and weight) 6/7/2009 9:31:50 PM |

Thanks for the input everybody. Sold it on CL for $100 to a guy who apparently resells for a living. I dbanned the hard drive (even though there wasn't any information on it anyway). I guess he knew what he was doing so you certainly can get a decent amount for an old laptop. I am still getting e-mails with offers to buy (even though I removed the ad). 6/7/2009 9:35:44 PM |

see, he probably could have got $150+ for it. not only did he get $100 for it, but the guy who bought it is gonna resell it.
cheap asses on tww != general buying public
my general rule with selling stuff on CL is start at least 20-30% higher than you think you can get for it...if nothing happens after 3 days drop the price and repost] 6/8/2009 10:04:22 AM |

I'd rather be a cheap ass than a dumb ass. Those specs are terrible. 6/8/2009 10:32:05 AM |

Actually I found that a lot of people resell them in 3rd world countries for way more than they are worth I just had someone come through that sold a used high end Compaq for $20 more than what it cost new. He had other business here and sold 6 or 7 in about 2 days. 6/8/2009 2:10:35 PM |
