Can anyone tell me what's the new tax bracket will be in NC. I've read the articles about the tax-increase coming, but couldn't find the specific increase anywhere.

"The plan would change the sales tax rate most people pay from 6.75% to 7%, while two new income tax brackets -- with rates of 8.25% and 8.5% -- would be created for the state's highest wage earners -- those making at least $200,000. The current top bracket is 7.75%. "

Nice. I've often wondered when they'll just cut to the chase and go ahead and have us fill out their bank account number on our direct deposit forms we fill out for our employers. Then they can decide how much more we owe them... because "the state needs the money."

i bitch about my hard earned money being wasted by an over stepping, ineffective and grossly inefficient government body. You're damn right, and everyone else should to. How hard is it to balance a budget based on your current revenue. Its not like every time I want to do something at my house I get paid more at work.

Can we please switch over to a fair tax or a flat tax? Maybe privatize education?

if people like you had their way

high earners would have the shit taxed out of them

everyone would have free health care

but who the fuck would want to put themselves through the 8-12 years of hell it takes to become a physician?

People with a genuine interest in providing medical care and a passion for helping their fellow man without their primary thought being how they're going to be compensated.

Better doctors, basically.

Actually, speaking for myself, I'd rather they find ways to spend less rather than raising taxes on anyone.

I actually agree with you on that, but there aren't enough mother teresa types in the world to fill the need that solely base their pursuit of medicine on altruism. On the opposite side of the spectrum there are equally few who are in it solely for the money(there are too many easier paths to a lot of money).

The majority of doctors consider both altruism and compensation (among other lesser factors). If you reduce compensation enough, they will find other professions that fulfill their professional/personal desires.

Of course my argument is flawed in that not all high earners are doctors and useful members of society. There's lawyers. Maybe they should have different tax levels for different professions. The problem is that while most of us would have no issue with lawyers being taxed more, the people making the laws are, for the most part, lawyers.

People saying they work harder than the average poor person: give me a fucking break. If you don't like it, bump yourself down a notch. Take a job pouring concrete for 9 hours a day for less than $10 an hour.

you're such a toolbag...it's okay for certain PROFESSIONS to get taxed more, but you jump down my throat when i suggest that people making above a certain amount of money should pay a higher percentage in taxes?

you don't know JACK SHIT, kid...you can hate on lawyers all you want, but a lot of them, ESPECIALLY the ones who make the most money that aren't senior partners, put in a fuckton more hours per week than your lame ass probably does

the problem is you don't agree with the monetary value set on what they do and so you get your panties in a wad that someone whose profession you don't like and barely comprehend can afford stuff you couldn't hope to in the foreseeable future

do i think that a higher income deserves a higher tax rate? sure do

do i think that people who make a higher income who bitch about taxes are a bunch of spoiled pussies who represent what is wrong with our culture? sure do

do i think everyone should have free [basic] health care? sure do

i will never deny the fact that i am a socio-capitalist...capitalism is corrupt by its very nature and socialism in its purest form fails to take into account the individuality of human beings because it relies on the premise that no person is worth more than another

but, by all means, keep bitching and whining about how badly the evil gubment keeps crapping on good americans...no one gives a rat's ass what you think about it, and it's not going to change

the part that really gets me is they raised the taxes b/c of the budget shorfall caused by the recession....but when the tax base is back to normal levels, are they going to repeal the taxes? No, they're just going to spend more until the whole cycle repeats itself.

^ agreed...and i'm not arguing the fact that the state's budget is poorly managed

BUT that is the case for most governments in a capitalist culture...take away the advantages of being in power and you're going to level the playing field for people who don't suck at their jobs...it's the same in EVERY state to varying degrees due to the factors that govern the states' economies (which makes it hard to compare one state to another)

i am amused by how many people think that, in general, an widespread economic problem can be pinpointed to a single person or even a relatively small group of people

I dont know what to think about tax raises to fund state government in these times...

I look at two extremes...

The first is raising the gas tax. People bitch about it, but it makes absolute sense. People are driving more efficient cars, and when prices go up, people drive less, all meaning less tax revenue, yet we are building more roads every day and maintaining the ones we already have. Something has to give. Its unfortunate that this means an increase in the tax rate, but you should be offsetting the expense by either not driving as much or driving a more efficient vehicle. This is a place where tax increases make sense. If you think the roads are so good they can be allowed to get a lot more pot holes, then raising taxes does not make sense.

The second scenario is tax raises for programs that you dont feel serve the public need. These are programs that only help certain individuals, but cost all tax payers a lot of money. Its hard to swallow a tax increase when you are suffering to support what 'you' might consider wasteful programs.

I think the problem is that there is a middle ground that is often ignored in politics. There has to be cuts to wasteful/non-required spending during tough times, but at some point there are programs that are too valuable to cut too deeply or those short term cuts will have much longer term costs and effects that will go well beyond any fiscal year savings. So, in that light, I would support increased taxes to cover short falls for programs that would cause the state long term damage.

Should be enough text above for people to rip apart my argument, so I'll leave it at that for now.

we should all be taxed at the same percentage regardless of income level, over a certain income.

"raising taxes on the rich" is nothing but class warfare and does nothing except fleece most of the populace in regards to how much the government takes from its people.

please. do you know how stupid you sound?

you cant say manual labor is the only thing that is 'hard work.' asinine.

further, its not a 'percent and a half' less. the feds collect about 40% of all income tax from the top 1%.

is it fair? no.

does it make it more difficult for that particular tax bracket to afford the necessities? no.

in theory, does it generally improve society for the full range of tax brackets by supplementing those groups that may not have the means by which to support themselves with the necessities? yes.

that isn't how it works genius. if you have to spend $200,000 and 10 years in college/post undergrad just to get your job, and then your job requires you to have a huge, and ever growing, knowledge base, expert technical skills, etc, you deserve more than some hopped over the fence immigrant who shoves concrete around all day.

so saying a doctor deserves more than a construction work is extreme?

an engineer deserves more than a cashier is extreme?

a teacher deserves more than a stockboy is extreme?

not that all of them require the same education & money to get there. the point is, education, training, skill, responsibility matters

In theory, you're taking money from the brightest and/or hardest working group and giving it to the dumbest and/or laziest group, thereby empowering them to be even lazier. Lots of economists would argue that you get a lot more gain by letting the people who earn lots of money (either through hard work or ingenuity) keep it and continue to work hard or innovate.

If you chisel away incentives for innovation (AKA keep pumping up the tax on the wealthy) then you're going to slow down economic advance and in the long run hurt the poor people you were trying to help.

You make all of the rich out to be some pussified section of society that got lucky as shit and should be paying everyone else's way b/c everyone else had such bad luck. Thats complete bull shit. A lot of those top earners worked their ass off or had an idea that they risked a lot of time and money on. If you lessen the incentive for those people then you're going to hurt us more than help us.

Of course there will be a tax increase. We have to be able to pay for the $25 extra a week that unemployed people now get.
