my wife's dog has fur just above her nails that looks like a false set of nails. is there a name for it? I'm trying to narrow down what breeds she is mixed with, and wondered of that might be a breed specific characteristic.

I can only assume you're talking about dewclaws. They are somewhat breed specific. Generally only large working breed dogs will be born with them. They're also very easy to have removed.

dew claws are the claws on the back of the leg, a thumb if you will, for dogs.

He is basically talking about long hairs that protrude from the toe like a dr. seuss character.

and the hairs don't protrude... it's just the coloring of the fur on her toes in specific dark patches, just over her toe nails.

I think you're referring to "penciling" (pencil marks) on the toes. Its seen in German Shepherds.

why i might not have know how to describe it in the best way, i never said i have confused it for nails

it is a streak of fur coming up from where her nails are... depending on the angle, it either makes her nails appear longer, or that she has a "second set" due to the color of the fur.
