Thinking of getting a second ps3 so that me and the gf can both play online in the same games. Just wondering if anyone is doing this and how much bandwidth it needs. I have RR Turbo (10mbps) so i think it should be fine. 6/17/2009 5:54:46 PM |

No, everything does not run "just fine", however it should work acceptably. Look up NAT. Only a single device on your subnet can accept incoming connections on a particular port at any given time. If you have 2 devices connected to the same service (be it XBox live or whatever they call the PS3 online service), only 1 of them will be able to receive inbound connections.
The other will suffer reduced network performance finding and connecting to games, will not be able to host a game, and will usually suffer increased (only slightly) latency in online play. Depending on what games you play, this may be unnoticeable or it may be frustrating.
My brother and I did this on xbox live while he was here. It's not even remotely noticeable playing Halo Wars, but in a game where 20 or 30 ms makes a difference like an FPS it can be annoying.] 6/17/2009 6:47:17 PM |

does TWC still give you an extra IP for like 5 bucks a month? 6/17/2009 6:55:30 PM |

if the ps3 software is not shit then it will do upnp and open up one port on your fw per device. When trying to recieve connections, each device will use its own port and you wont have problems. There is no need for multiple ip addresses. 6/18/2009 9:38:26 AM |

yeah, most routers advertised as "Live! compatible" are just upnp supported.
both services use it, I was just hesitant to bring it up after Limpy seemed to know first hand PS3 Network has issues.

of course with the numerous known security vulnerabilities in UPnP, it should be universally disabled by now 6/18/2009 2:24:37 PM |

fwiw i think there are still some packet losses due to some port conflicts, i only mentioned that it didn't seem to hurt our gameplay much. i'd like to know about the static ip for other reasons like maybe a tf2 server 6/18/2009 6:31:19 PM |

i have absolutely no motivation to call as I'm with suddenlink now. I just know in the past TWC gave you an extra IP, albeit not static, for leik 5-10 bucks extra a month.
IIRC, they won't give out statics these days unless you're rr.biz

xbox live uses 1 port for incoming connections.
I don't have a PS3 so I can't say anything about it with certainty. 6/18/2009 7:48:12 PM |

There is no need for a second IP address. You get on multiple computers at home without issue, the game systems are no different. 6/19/2009 6:36:17 AM |
