I read through the old threads regarding mattress shopping: what to get, where to go (local Raleigh)

I liked a mattress I saw at The Original Mattress Factory and one at America Mattress (Serta). Both were reasonably priced, but I'm hung up on the whole one-sided (No-flip) or two sided (flip).

I need advice on where to go from here.

I actually just purchased a bed last Sunday. While I am not sure about this flip vs. no flip thing if you are environmentally conscious as I am then you should check out mattresses made from organic cotton and natural latex. They don't contain the toxins that "normal" mattresses do and they are made from sustainable resources. Here is the bed I bought and it is amazing!

^^ If you take into account that most people spend 1/4-1/3 of their life sleeping then it seems prudent, at least to me, to have the most comfortable bed affordable especially when it supports a sustainable lifestyle.

Visit your local Mattress Firm. They will be able to help you and get you something in a price range you are comfortable with. They do not carry any mattress you can flip and that is because you do not need to flip your mattress, instead you need to turn them (head to foot) twice a year. Flipping a mattress messes up the coil system which will harm the durability of your mattress.

I just started working for Mattress Firm and they are more qualified to help you than any local mattress company because they actually have to learn specs and details about each mattress in the store.

By sustainable I meant it is comprised of sustainable materials, i.e. organic cotton, natural latex and bamboo. Buying a used mattress doesn't seem very hygienic.

This depends on the type of mattress you get and the quality of coil construction.

Thanks for the opinion but they're probably just as qualified about selling their own products as the people working at The Original Mattress Factory are at selling their own stuff.


I think I'm going to try a the mattresses out for as long as I can before buying one.

I bought mine from Mattress Warehouse in Cary. It's actually only about a block from the Mattress Firm there so you can shop both back to back.

The salesperson at The Mattress Firm was really pushy about trying to lock me into a purchase that night. When I went to Mattress Warehouse I figured out why...They were willing to cut a much better deal on the same level of quality mattress.

I looked mostly at the Sealy Posturepedic and Simmons Beautyrest mattresses. They were both about the same comfort level when compared at the same price point, but the Beautyrest's "pocketed coils" did a much better job of isolating my girlfriend's movements. When she gets out of bed it doesn't shake the whole bed like the Sealy mattresses do. Ended up going with some Beautyrest Cal King mattress.

You can negotiate them down a lot...My mattress was supposedly $2k or something and they had it marked on sale for $1300. The guy working that night told me he could do $1150, but I told him I wanted to look around some more. I went back a couple days later and talked to a different salesperson who ended up giving it to me for $950ish with free delivery.

i got the floor model at a Mattress King in Charlottesville for $800, it was the last one they had, but had been listed as $2000 (they wanted the last one to go)

I got a Sealy from Big Lots for 399 + tax about 2.5 years ago. Queen size.

It was nice for about 18 months.

Add me to the $1600 mattress (& box spring) club. I have one of those cheapest mattress/box spring sets that I could find (new at the time) for 5 years now. Went looking at mattresses with the wife and started laying on them without looking at the price to find the most comfortable one; of course it's the second or third most expensive one in the store (marked at $1800). A little haggling got 20% off and after delivery fees and taxes it came to right at 1600, pulled the trigger this morning.

Stearns & Foster, Solid (no springs) Talalay Latex Core Mattress

Best I can tell it's like the bed HockeyRoman posted except the brand is different, the one I bought is a 60/40% natural/synthetic latex mix, has some bamboo fiber shit instead of organic cotton, and in the Firm flavor (they had Medium-Firm,Firm,UltraFirm). It also appears that the Sealy is on sale for $1399 (queen) at mattress firm, which is not a bad price imo considering you don't have to haggle for it.

My bed is cool but sucks for jumping because it makes a HEE HAW sound when you bounce

But if you bang someone and there is a significant vertical element (ie piledriver or jack knife) it holds up fine

Sigh. Bamboo is NOT a sustainable material, not matter what those crackhead hippies are telling you. You cannot just take bamboo and magically pull a fiber out of it. If so, yes, it would be sustainable cause the stuff grows like a weed. What you bought was RAYON. They take the bamboo, crush it up into a pulp, and with a SHIT TON of abrasive and lovely chemicals, they extrude a fiber. And call it bamboo.

If technology has changed, and they have managed to extrude a bamboo fiber, point me to the scientific article. I'd love to see it. Making a fiber from bamboo is about as easy as pulling a fiber from a tree trunk.

I got mine from Big Lots too and I like it a lot. It feels like a cloud and I think it was only like 400 or something around there
