OK so this trailer was suffering from some issues. First and foremost, one of the leaf spring hangers had gone on vacation from the framerail. Jeepman was able do a fantastic job of welding it back in place, but it then became obvious the poor girl has been "towed hard and put up wet" so to speak. The shackle hangers were oblonged badly and needed some attention and we noticed one of the tires had a few busted belts and some seperated tread. A new tire and she was roadworthy again, but just barely. The suspension was not working very well and the poor fenders were about to jump ship, so I got to work.


Here are the worn out spring shackles: (these are actually wear items FYI) Also note the new ones are a little longer, this should actually lower the trailer a very small amount if any.



I needed some new bolts and bushings too, since trailers are fairly modular construction getting parts is pretty easy.




At this point it became apparant that some more tires had taken a beating and needed replacement


as did the equalizers


And in the process I went ahead and checked up on the bearing preload all around, re-fitted the fenders in a much more stable manner, and threw some new dust caps on the hubs. Oh, and made one other little discovery

Well its rated for 10k but something that heavy and a lot shorter, like a Bobcat might have caused all the problems I am having to fix. I picked this up from a friend, and I have used this trailer several times. A little over a year ago none of the worn out shit was worn out. I bet someone put a Bobcat on it or a load of bricks or something. I think it failed right there in that particular spot due to the heat from the welds weakening the steel.

^^well, hell, tread separation on a trailer tire is a sure sign of neglect, overloading, or both. i hear people whine and cry all the time on how they can't get a quality ST tire but yet i see either a tire on a dual axle trailer that is under inflated causing the other tire to be overloaded or the entire trailer is overloaded. most people who pull trailers just don't understand the importance of checking the air pressure in the tires. i still think dmv should require drivers to have an endorsement on their license if they wish to tow. Picked up a 3ton load in Asheville and the tire pictured above with the lil wiggle in the tread finally went square somewhere around Statesville. Thought it was Ivan's WORN THE FUCK OUT ball mount at first, then thought the trailer was coming apart, but finally could see the MASSIVE bubble in the tire and pulled off in GSO to change it. Threw on the goodyear wrangler spare and it was smooth as glass all the way home.

ball mount works just fine on my vehicles. maybe caddy put your reciever on a diet. besides, that mount is only like 1 maybe 2 years old. it was bought when i mangled the other one going to harlan a while back.

lol, that's just the ghetto/cheap version of those spring cushioned mounts. yeah, like i said i need a forged mount that's rated for the loads my trailer sees. that mount was just supposed to be a temporary get home fix, but you know how that goes.

not really, just put a 15 amp circuit breaker on it, so if you forget to unplug it, it will trip when you run it, then you can just reset it
