i cut off our real friendship a couple years ago b/c she was so psychotic that i couldn't handle her. we had to stay in touch b/c of burlesque but even that now is cut off.

i watched her puppy for her....b/c she got one against everyones' advice and then said it was ruining her life b/c it needed attention. my phone died overnight and i woke up at 12 voicemails saying that she was going to report the dog as stolen. but she was the one that took it here meanwhile poor puppy was an angel for me-i took him to the park and he was so happy. she crates him 22 hours a day and wonders why he's hyper when she lets him out. poor puppy

I used to have this problem as well. Basically, I would insult said toxic friends incessantly with a smile on my face and for some reason they kept coming back for more? Since this tactic didn't work, I just stopped all communication entirely and that detoxed my life with a quickness. Toxic friends are easy to spot early, but sometimes hard to get rid of without being a total ass.

god this is true. but it gets to a point where being a total ass is necessary. i've had the same 3 best friends since i was 11. we don't live close anymore or talk very often, but we are always there for each other and when we do get together it's like we were never apart. "friends" i have made since don't seem to be of the same quality. i have a lot of aquantances, 3 real friends.
