Just a quick note: A relatively cheap one can be had new for like $20.

One other quick note: If you want to actually be able to control the aircraft properly and precisely you'll want a good joystick, not a cheap one.

What flight simulators are you interested in "playing"? Depending upon the flight simulator I hesistate to call them games or state that I'm "playing" them. Microsoft Flight Simulator, for instance, is an extremely useful simulation tool for real pilots and it can teach you a great deal about things from flight in general all the way up to more advanced activities such as ADF and VOR navigation, ILS approaches, etc. MS Flight Sim isn't really a game and if you plan to use it that way you'll most likely be rather disappointed. It's something that you'll need to invest a good bit of effort into to properly understand, but that simulator can show you quite a bit about flight.

I recommend MS Flight Sim 2004 (FS9) or MS Flight Sim X (FSX). FSX has the best graphics, although FS9 isn't too far behind. FS9, however, has fewer bugs than FSX (Almost none after you do the updates). The last I heard, the FS team had apparently been disbanded, so I don't foresee any updates coming out in the near future. FS9 was out long enough for most of the bugs to be fixed and you can find it for something like $10 or less.

As far as shooting up shit goes: If you want something less pure and involved but still rather realistic, I'd suggest something like Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3. This can be had for very little $, like $10 or less.

There used to be another simulator called Flight Unlimited that was a lot of fun as well if you can get your hands on it (it's quite old).
