I bought a cornhole set that has two coats of lacquer already applied. I had planned to paint a Hurricanes symbol on each set but I am unsure how to go about doing this.

I live in an apartment complex so it makes it a little difficult to do the sanding and mineral spirits and etc without disturbing my neighbors as suggested here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x7593402

Any suggestions? Can you paint the symbols over lacquer with acrylic and then lacquer on top of that?

hmm, maybe buy a canes car magnet and hot glue it with a final clear coat protective layer around the top surface and sides?


edit: you might want to sand before glueing the magnet. I haven't worked with laquered surfaces much but i think a course paper should be good enough.

I built my set, and have a NCSU board and a UNC board (wife is UNC grad).

Basically I painted the base colors I wanted on each board, and then found some large clear car stickers from the conference store, which have worked out extremely well. Much cleaner than I could have painted, and it's almost impossible to tell they are stickers.

The car magnet is a good idea to use as a base to follow. Not to toot my own horn, but I am pretty artistic and can paint or draw what I see.

the 2nd pic isn't showing up for me.

it would be cool to have the logo towards the top with the cornhole being the eye of the storm (might want to staple black cloth underneath the hole so the eye still looks black when you look at it), then mayhaps a "GO 'CANES" or something of the like in the bottom half of the board.

if the eye of the storm was going to the the cornhole inthe board, it would be a good idea to staple black cloth under the hole (like a beanbag catcher) so you wouldn't see grass or concrete or whatever through the hole... the eye of the storm would always be black.

I can give you the guy's info who made it for me! $50 and it came lacquered and it's regulation size and sturdy!

yea it'll be tough, i think that route is a no go.


what you could do is paint the board like it's a birds eye view of half of the ice, include all the blue lines, the 2 face off circles down, draw a net above the hole and make the cornhole be the center of the goalies crease. That would take a lot more work and it might be too "out there" for some peoples liking.

If it were my board i'd paint one white, the other black, and have a canes logo glued on each with some thing "Carolina Hurricanes" on one and "GO 'Canes on the other"..... i like simple designs.

another cool idea would be to basically have the same thing, but instead of having just a solid color (black or white), take a painters stick and dip it in red paint and shake it over the solid background color and make it look all crazy. you could still put a canes logo on the board if u went that route. I think i like this idea the most.

EDIT: no spray paint, it might stay on for a while but it'd come off before too long. How you decide to go about prepping the board and painting it is dependent on what design you decide to go with.

i personally would sand it all off and paint it however i wanted to. dunno how much trouble that would be, as you said you lived in an apartment. you could do it in the parking lot, i suppose.

sanding by hand would take some effort, and i'm not sure if the surface would look too great afterwards.

i would do a light sanding after using the killz product though. just don't rely solely on sanding.

Well, I bought the Killz Primer for indoor/outdoor for about $7 and I have primed both surfaces in the "yard" and I'm waiting for them to dry.

We were going to paint one white, one black but you cannot see the black at night so we have decided on one white, one red. Still not completely set on the design.

you can go to Wal-Mart or any arts and crafts store and get stencils of letters or stickers for mailboxes and whatnot that you can outline onto the board and color in.

the only thing I can say about this project is don't put too much lacquer on it because the bags will just slide right off, happened to a friend of mine. I finished mine with a spray on clear coat for shine but still kept the surface a bit rough.

I really like those designs, especially the lines on the edges.

I think I put three coats of gloss polyurethane on my boards, and they have a good slickness.

4 of the 8 bags are sewn. My sewing machine does double stitching so they should be pretty sturdy. Making them white and black since they didn't have red duck cloth. I might dye the white ones red so they don't show dirt as badly. I'll post a picture of them when they are finished.

how much was too much in that case?
how did you keep it tough? what spray on product did you use? and its not too slippery?

That paint is going to orange peel eventually.

The only paint you can put over laquer is more laquer or other oil based paint. Anything else is eventually going to react and fuck up. Laquer is a oil based paint with suspension chemicals. Unlike acrylics, it never "sets".

And stripping it is a serious, noxious mess. You would have been much better off buying the plywood boards raw, and then sealing them yourself. And the advice in that thread for sanding the laquer finish down is only going to delay the inevitable. You need to strip it off, and you should use a paint stripper to do it.

Killz will work great, as it's oil on oil. But if you spraypaint over that, or use acrylic over that, it's going to get fucccckkkeeed up and either orange peel or come off in sheets as the humidity gets to it. I'd continue with oil based paints for the colors, plop the sitckers on there, and then use another clear laquer over the top.

everything i've read on some cornhole board said to use water based paints, and use a water based protective coating...i think it's called minwax acrylic or something like that. it won't turn crazy colors.

i'm just wondering how it impacts the slide

Good thing I got all oil based paints to go over the Kilz.

And about me being better off making it myself...hah. I didn't really have a choice. I might be crafty but I don't have tools to do it. I bought this one already lacquered and got it for really cheap so whatever. Paint peels. *shrugs*

And synapse - I'm curious as to why you think a factory will have better bags than someone making them?

Your choice but allow me to enlighten you from my POV .

Did you know working as a seamstress in a factory is an entry level job that doesn't require any previous experience?

Quality assurance means someone else looks at the poduct and says it is up to standards, right? Wouldn't you rather be your own quality assurance? You say you want some cornhole bags, I make them, you aren't sastisfied, you don't buy them...instead of buying them from a factory then trying to do a return over the phone. I will even fix any bags that you purchase from me if anything happens to them.

And my standards are likely higher than a factory. Quanity versus Quality..one goes up, the other goes down, in general.

And superior equipment...Ehh, Industrial versuses Commercial. Tit for tat.

I teach a class and we cover an entire section on factory goods versus handmade products.

So, if anyone is interested in some handmade, quality cornhole bags, let me know. Kthx.
