you want video over ip, video over component or something else?
IP is like you see on campus, all the cameras are web based and connected via Ethernet. Vid over component is like CCTV or in like a Chinese restaurant, their security cameras. Its the 3 color wire.
How much you willing to spend? And also is this just for surveillance, or general theft prevention, in which case you might want to look into professional security solutions
Also a nice call to your local police office does wonders. maybe its a spree and not just around you. This for your house or you working for a complex or something? 7/14/2009 12:48:04 PM |

I am very partial to Axis cameras myself for IP surveillance. Thats what we use. We have some that are motion tracking and will record and can be viewed and controlled remotely with a web browser. Not sure what the cost would be for those now or what kinda cash your looking to spend. 7/14/2009 1:19:45 PM |

its for a house, and I think he's leaning towards a DVR based system. 7/14/2009 1:22:39 PM |

The resolution of most of the cheap security cameras won't give you a face. I've had a hard time finding decent specs to compare cameras as well, so any advice would be appreciated. 7/14/2009 10:25:57 PM |

there was an AWESOME linux distro a guy put together for a home automation/security/media gateway a few years back but I can't remember the name of it. there's a nice linux package for just security though. it's based on v4l, but I don't remember the name. 7/15/2009 7:18:43 PM |
