My computer has decided to quit on me. it began after the wireless stopped working, but now it won't even boot b/c of some problem with the ethernet controller.
Any advice on what to do or a good place to take it if it needs to be repaired??? 7/15/2009 2:12:28 PM |

does it beep when you turn it on? are there fans spinning and you just don't get anything on the monitor? have you tried booting without the ethernet card (unless it is onboard)? 7/15/2009 2:20:32 PM |

Try removing the ethernet card or, if it's built-in, disable it in the BIOS.

I'm thinking it could be a number of things...
- hard drive is not in boot sequence - O/S is corrupted - hard drive is dead - something else
Need more details on what kind of machine and a screenshot or error message. 7/15/2009 3:59:33 PM |

Between the HP/Compaq logo and the Windows XP splash screen, spam the F8 button to pull up your Advanced Boot Options menu and select "Safe Mode".
Click Yes on the prompt that notifies you that you're working in this mode and then right click "My Computer" goto "Manage" and select "Device Manager". Under the "Network Adapters" tree find your ethernet card and click "Uninstall". Reboot the computer.
If your computer now gets past the mystery ethernet error after it reinstalls the card you win. If it still crashes at the same point you lose. Present a rematch by following all of the steps again and selecting "Disable" this time instead of Uninstall. If this also fails, follow the steps yet again and re-enable the card, reboot, spam F8, choose "Safe Mode with Networking" and test your internet in safe mode. (Also PM me for the possibility of a remote support session if this works).
If all of the above fails, watch your HP/Compaq splash for the key you must press to enter setup. F2, Esc, Del something like that. Inside of the bios poke around until you find the Enable/Disable toggle for LAN or Ethernet or Network, etc. Probably under Advanced.
Good Luck.
