I can't tell you how many times I rolled up going 15-20 over on the back of the white Camaro and the navy Camaro that used to work the hell out of I-40 all the time. They were easier to spot though with a couple of small antennae on the trunk and strobes visible in the top corners of the back glass (if you were looking for them.) I guess I'll throw the first three digits of this license plate into my memory and keep an eye out for it.

i rolled up on a black "marked" tahoe sitting on the side of the road, while i was running 70mph
did not even notice it until i was less than 100 yds away
luckily he wasnt using laser or radar, Valentine V1 never went off, but i was soo busted if he wanted to do anything 7/15/2009 5:07:07 PM |

So now I have to keep my guard up for Crown Vics, Impalas, Chargers, Tahoes, Expeditions, and a black Z06, plus motorcycles (like the one that pulled me on Wade Ave. 2 weeks ago) and cops standing on overpasses. Geez....
I also swear I saw a black Marauder sitting next to a marked CVPI (immediately next to, not pulled over by) just after one of those overpass speed traps a couple of months ago, but I thought the only state using Marauders in an LEO role was Florida. Wonder if they scored one from a drug bust or something...another to worry about if so! 7/15/2009 5:32:48 PM |

That's bullshit. There is no damn reason at all for them to be using such an expensive cop car (with significantly higher operating costs, etc).
Someone with a beat-up 3/4 or 1-ton truck needs to take a ticket for the team and "accidentally" rear end that 'Vette at a stoplight.

We need to call the news. The local paramedics caught shit for trying to buy a charger just earlier this year.
Even if it comes out that it's a seizure vehicle, the media exposure will make it useless. 7/15/2009 7:33:05 PM |

Oh please, a $30,000 muscle car versus a $15,000 crown vic or impala. It's purely an ego thing. 7/15/2009 9:12:33 PM |
BigBlueRam All American 16852 Posts user info edit post |
^^^it is a seizure vehicle. if they even ran a story, i doubt anything would come of it. charlotte already has a cobra and a turbo 350z, clayton has a new mustang gt, etc... it's nothing uncommon for larger cities to employ one or more such vehicles for traffic enforcement/muscle flexing to criminals that they can take your car. i thought i read recently that the ems chargers finally got approved? maybe not...
really, if you think about it, it's not THAT much of a waste. assume they could get $30-35k out of it at auction. i don't know for sure, but i'd be willing to bet a new charger/crown vic isn't a whole hell of a lot less by the time you add all the equipment. it should pwn either of those cars in gas mileage. leo vehicles get fairly religious servicing, so intervals aren't likely to be any different. you could also probably assume it's going to be fairly well taken care of. not spending hours on end idling, running through medians, over curbs, etc. like a regular patrol car.
^^oh, definitely. not to mention better initial response time, and not wasting ambulances on minor calls causing them to possibly miss a major one.

^^i'll bet they don't go for less than $20k apiece, if that low. outfitting them with the equipment/electronics could easily tack another $8-10k on.

So do they put the patients in the trunk or what?
Seems like a minivan would be better choice for "fast response".

if they need to transport someone they will still call an ambulance, but calls do not always require transport and chargers are much less expensive to purchase and operate. they will still have ambulances, but their fleet will be enhanced with these chargers.
anyone with some common sense would agree its a good idea

Type III Ambulance (Majority of Wake Ambulances) - ~ $100-125k without equipment.
Dodge Charger bought from state fleet vehicle contract ~ $21,087 (again, without equipment)

^^as a comparison: http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1355967.html
fully equipped charger- $50,900 fully equipped ambulance- $145,000
good link. looks like the only thing under $20k is the b9c1 impala, which is a pile of junk in performance comparison, so it's not surprising to see it lower. i did expect there to be more difference in the price of the crown vic/hemi charger though, with the charger commanding a $1-2k premium. that's a no brainer with them so close, the charger is the far superior vehicle.
^oh don't think you're exempt. i've heard of a small fleet of unmarked bmw's running around down there. no doubt some sort of donation from the plant...

The EMS chargers are not sent instead of an ambulance. They are staffed with paramedics who have been in the Wake County system for a while (I forget the minimum number of years) and aren't really a supervisor vehicle so much as another set of hands with experience and they go to certain high acuity calls (choking, allergic reaction, cardiac arrest..). They decided on chargers instead of tahoes or suburbans for cost and because they don't need the extra room. People were upset with them buying sports cars like that but so far they haven't had problems. 7/16/2009 12:47:47 PM |

Unless of course the patient ends up needing transport after all, in which case they are fucked. But they look so damn cool driving them. 7/16/2009 12:49:53 PM |

An EMS system I used to work for formally used a quick response vehicle staffed with a paramedic for all calls (we drove chargers, caprices, crown vics, and expeditions). In theory, it cut costs to both the agency and to the patient as anyone who has ever worked in emergency services knows, as many as 30-40% of patients in urban areas do not require transport by ambulance, even though most medical directors would disagree with that figure (its their license afterall, C.Y.A). Ambulances were only dispatched to calls EMD deemed appropriate, while non-emergent calls (alpha, omega, and some bravo calls) only recieved a Paramedic QRV initially.
Wake's APP system serves as a hybrid between a QRV and traditional EMS system. From what I understand its working out very well, with a few exceptions here and there (i.e. a friend who works with Wake told a story about a MVC patient who refused care, the paramedic on scene requested an APP who drove from downtown to Capital and Highwoods, lights and sirens, to have the patient sign a refusal).
Even cooler than the Chargers:

why didn't the on-scene unit have the patient sign the form? if a patient is coherent and of legal consent age they can refuse transport. the care provider just has to have a witness of a different dept. or even a civilian sign the form but the witness can't be from the same dept. so i can't understand why the app wasn't canceled (or called).7/16/2009 8:57:21 PM |
DropsOfAir Veteran 324 Posts user info edit post |
That's my point, the new system is working well from what I hear, but there are still a few hiccups here and there, like this total waste of the resource and the lack of intelligence by someone to have a vehicle drive full tilt boogie for no reason at all.
The reason given to me by the friend was that his partner thought the APP would be able to talk the guy into going to the hospital.
