My co-worker has a 2001 Ford Escape (FWD) with 86,000 miles. She's been having problems with it (not exactly sure what) and the Ford dealership said the tranny is done for and needs to be replaced. They quoted her $3500.

That seems a bit steep. Is there anyone in particular around town I should direct her to for a second opinion?

I asked her what it was doing, and it sounds like massive slippage to me. She said she'd put it into Drive from Park and it wouldn't engage or move for a bit, and then BAM lock in and go.

She got another quote for $2900 from somewhere.

Nah...more likely the problem is written on the front grill.
