Recently, my automatic 01 Ranger will sproadically not engage into gear after a cold crank. It seems as if one rear wheel is free to spin while the other is locked. It doesn't happen very often, and eventually engages after idling in gear for a few minutes...

Any Ideas what the problem could be?

that style LSD is pretty good, how many miles on it, and have you ever changed the fluid in it?

yeah, maybe you should change the gear oil. be sure to put in your friction modifier.

[Edited on July 30, 2009 at 10:18 AM. Reason : friction modifier only if it's LSD]

is one wheel actually spinning or are just relating some kind of completely wrong analogy?

sounds much more like a transmission issue to me.

tranny fluid/filter changed 2-3 years ago, but not sure about the gear oil....I'll look into it. What's the function of the friction modifier?

I'm certain one wheel is free to spin....hence my assumption something in the rear diff is sticking.

This has only recently started and happens very rarely...maybe once every 2 months...Otherwise no problems with eiter tranny or diff

friction modifier is some additive stuff you have to add to the gear oil in an LSD or it won't work properly. it's not optional. google it. i'm not sure how it works.

[Edited on July 30, 2009 at 10:43 AM. Reason : but it does sound more like transmission. your description is confusing.]

It doesn't matter what kind of rear end you have...if it's ok, at least ONE of the wheels will spin. Did you park in a vat of grease?

If it's not ok...you're gonna be hearing a lot of shit flying around in it and it won't move...PERIOD.

Not even a Detroit Locker will hang open. Not even an LSD either. The big thing about limited slip diffs is wearing out the clutch packs...in which case, you'll be doing the one-wheel peel instead of burnin' 'em both down.

You, sir, have an automatic with sticky solenoids. Get you a can of SeaFoam TransTune and read the directions. Drive for a couple of days and then change that fluid and filter. If you're lucky, nothing's fucked permanently.

Doubtful its a LS..Look inside the door at the white tag and look at the AXL code under it and refer to this site..for example mine is 87...which is a 7.5" rear with 4.10 open

zxappeal has already told us that it doesn't matter whether it's an lsd or not

[Edited on August 4, 2009 at 9:29 PM. Reason : i generally listen to what zxappeal has to say on automotive topics]

the point is that it doesnt fuckin matter whether or not its a limited slip, if it moves at all, its not the rear end
