Well, not in the broader sense, but:

What a transparent, cynical move. Does he think the average American is so unsophisticated that they'd turn on him for showing a little taste in beers? Are we to really to believe that a man who likes arugula really enjoys Bud Light?
Somehow I doubt that's a Bud Light
I wouldn't be so miffed if were just a matter of pandering, but he had an opportunity to promote any of the hundreds of great American craft breweries, and instead he chooses to give foreign-owned beer-flavored water free publicity.
What about a beer brewed in D.C. or Chicago? Or better yet, combine pandering and taste and drink a beer brewed in a swing state!
Or what about:
It was brewed specifically for him!7/30/2009 4:08:27 PM |

Like I said in the thread pertaining to this whole issue, why not offer him something like a $10,000 a plate dinner at the White House? Or I guess ALL COPS LIKE CHEAP BEER so that will do
I think he heard people say about both Clinton and Bush "I'd like to have a beer with that guy" and he's just taking it overboard
Oh I offended you on national TV because I jumped to a bad conclusion before getting all the facts? This $3 beer should more than make up for it!

The cop prefers Blue Moon. It's in the article linked at the top of this thread.
Also, does it worry anybody else that these people are still around?
Quote : | "For instance, there is the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, which led the fight for Prohibition in the early 20th century. Rita K. Wert, the group's national president, said her organization is disappointed that the president is serving beer at all. "There are so many other beverages he could have chosen that would have served just as well," she said, mentioning lemonade or iced tea." |
Quote : | "honestly what difference does it make if the President drinks or not?" |
I have trouble trusting anybody who won't so much as drink a beer, possibly excluding those with medical conditions.
Also, consider the two sides in WWII:
Teetotalers who abhorred tobacco: Adolf Hitler Raging Alcoholics and chain smokers: FDR, Winston Churchill
^Thank you for your helpful input. Long-windedness is certainly worse than, for example, people who go around editing other people's sentences for fun.

This has nothing to do with macro v. micro. This is entirely about the type of beer. Bud is an American-style Lager, my friend. And microbreweries can pump out that watery stuff just as well as those fucks at Anheuser-Busch and many do. Conversely, you can find big name breweries making many different types of lagers or ales or ciders or what have you.
Microbreweries were important in the 1980s, because they proved that Americans can enjoy other types of beer besides pale lager. But now everyone is playing the variety game. Even Anheuser-Busch has "American Ale" or some such. The "microbrew" moment has pased.
Personally, I think the only people that still worship at the alter of the microbrew are people who actually think paying $6 for a pint of bitter makes them a fucking beer connoisseur, when it really just means they are gullible fucks.

Bud is an American Adjunct Lager style. There's a big difference. Drink Bud and something like Victory Prima Pils side-by-side and I promise you'll taste the difference between an American Adjunct Lager and an American Lager.

Bud Light is too expensive for what you get. For just a couple bucks more, you can get way tastier beer (from the store).
I have not had a Budweiser beer in a looong time. But I'm sure I'll take it back up around Christmas. I love those fucking horses in the snow. I'll also start drinking Coke again...Santa packs are coming, Santa packs are coming, Santa packs are coming...
I don't know what beer I would have chosen as president. I probably wouldn't have specified. I mean, you wanna relate to the everyman, you best order whatever's on special and drink at least six of them bitches.

I realized how distant the Obamas were from regular folks like me when Michelle Obama first started talking about shopping at J. Crew to save money.
I didn't expect her to profess her love for Wal-Mart. She probably shouldn't have said anything at all. I mean, they made millions of dollars a year...there's no real way to relate besides the whole one-leg-at-a-time bit.
Same goes for this beer thing. Obama shoulda just straight up picked his favorite beer (if he even drinks it), and nobody's favorite beer is Bud Light, excepting those folks with the palates of middle schoolers. I mean, even the people who take pride in loving bad beer don't pick Bud Light.

And as far as credibility goes-- umm, I brew my own? I subscribe to brewing periodicals and read books on the subject? I'm a teacher, and thus inherently a borderline alcoholic, who prefers to feed his borderline addiction with variety rather than quantity?

Interesting piece of information I hadn't heard about, and for whatever reason was placed at the very end of the linked article I posted:
Quote : | " Meanwhile, a black Cambridge police sergeant on the scene the day of Gates' arrest wrote a letter to Crowley, asking him to mention to Gates and Obama that he is now known as the "black sergeant" and to some others as an "uncle Tom." advertisement
"I'm forced to ponder the notion that as a result of speaking the truth and coming to the defense of a friend and colleague, who just happens to be white, that I have somehow betrayed my heritage," Sgt. Leon Lashley wrote. "Please convey my concerns to the president that Mr. Gates' actions may have caused grave and potentially irreparable harm to the struggle for racial harmony in this country and perhaps throughout the world."
Lashley wrote in the letter he would like Gates to reflect on the incident and ask himself what responsibility he bears, what he can do to heal the rift and what he can do to mitigate the damage done to the officers' reputations." |
