This thread is for anyone looking for a running buddy.
I'd like to start getting together with some folk after work a few days a week to run.
Personally, I'm looking to run some of the singletrack out at Umstead around 6pm, but I'll run pretty much anywhere.
Anyone interested in meeting up? 8/3/2009 4:08:31 PM |

There's some pretty decent runners on here.
I just need motivation to actually RUN. I'll run any pace between 6:30/mile-10:00/mile.
Just trying to rekindle my love for running. I used to be decently hardcore a few years ago. 8/3/2009 4:44:12 PM |

Any people here planning to run the Raleigh Marathon, Medoc Mountain Marathon or OBX Marathon this year?
I'm interested in running any of those and would be interested in building a support team with someone. 8/3/2009 5:11:20 PM |

If I lived in Raleigh I would love to do some of the trails out at Umstead, but I'm in Greensboro. I'm doing on average 5-7 mile runs a day, sometimes twice a day if I feel really motivated. If anyone out this way wants to start running let me know.
^I'm looking for a half marathon in the spring, and a full marathon this time next year.

I'm trying to decide between the three I mentioned in my previous post. Have you run the Raleigh marathon before? If so, what are your thoughts? How hilly is the course? Is it a good Boston qualifier?
I'm also considering flying to San Fran to run the Nike Women's Marathon, because finishers receive a Tiffany necklace. 8/4/2009 8:07:38 AM |

^^if you are going to be anywhere near the cutoff time for Boston, then Raleigh is probably one of the worst in the area to try to qualify for Boston with because it is relatively hilly. Your best bet out of those three is the OBX marathon.
I ran the Kiawah Island marathon last year and it was an extremely fast, flat course. Plus it's right near Charleston, which is fun.
If I were in Raleigh, I'd be glad to meet up with you people for some training--especially some trail runs. 8/4/2009 9:02:57 AM |

I used to live close to Umstead but still work at the Cary mall so I can make this work. let me know. I usually will do 10 miles at a 8:00/mile pace but have gotten into biking a little more. I think I want to do the half marathon for City of Oaks. But anyway count me in for the 'club' 8/4/2009 2:23:43 PM |
lucyinthesky All American 11614 Posts user info edit post |
^^^ I have to drop 13 minutes to qualify for Boston. I've heard Kiaweh is perfect. And it's ideal for me, living in Florida, since it's flat.
However, I have tons of free places to stay on the Outer Banks, so it's probably best for me to go that route. Thanks for the feedback. 8/4/2009 2:41:20 PM |

Cheerwhiner, I'll send you a PM soon and we can try and get up. I doubt i'd be down for a 10 miler anytime soon...but I'd be down to run with you as long/far as I can. 8/6/2009 11:22:28 PM |

I'm gonna do the OBX Half-Marathon.
I want to do two more halfs before I do a full, that way I will have 5 under my belt before I attempt a full.
I might be interested in running Umstead with you, only I will probably do it in boots and utes with a pack on.

I ran yesterday morning before work, and decided I wanted to buy a new Garmin. So I stopped by Dicks Sporting Goods on the way home from work, charged it up for a few minutes, and headed back out to Umstead to test it out on some singletrack.
Worked GREAT! Honestly cant ask for anything else from this watch.
It never lost signal with the satellites (even under some pretty thick tree cover), gave me real-time mile/min pace, let me know when I dropped behind my target pace & exactly by how much I was behind, etc.
Got it home, walked up to my computer and it automatically synced and uploaded my data to the Garmin website where it charted my run on a map, showing Umstead State Park and all my speed/elevation statistics.

Does the 405 have an altimeter? I ask because GPS elevation is pretty terrible (~10m accuracy vs ~1m horizontal) and on rides and runs you'll get some fairly off results for elevation, worse the longer your activity. Before Garmin rolled out Garmin Connect, you could use MotionBased which included an elevation correction feature which was quite a bit better than the watch though it wasn't without flaws itself (going over bridges gave you the elevation of the ground, not the bridge, easily worth 3-400 ft of gain on CSHs Saturday metric). Garmin Connect doesn't have elevation correction, at least it didnt a few weeks ago when I last uploaded. It's my only regret about the 305, I wish it had an altimeter for elevation. 8/9/2009 10:06:00 AM |

So I probably can't even run a half a mile, but I'd love to meet up and struggle along with any other n00bs who'd like to try and get into running. I'm between raleigh and durham alot, so I could meet up about anywhere near 40/ncsu/durham if anyone's interested. 8/9/2009 11:23:15 AM |

^Not trying to be mean, but I don't think running as a group will be very productive if you can't even run half a mile. My advice would be to work up a decent base by running solo and then come out to group runs when you can at least run a 2-mile or a 5K without having to walk. Then divide into pace groups based on similar ability. If you can't run half a mile, then meeting with a group of people who can run much longer than that may only be discouraging.

Every wednesday night at 6 we have a group run out of TrySports in crabtree valley mall. Turns out that most wednesdays are everyones speedwork days so typically we do mile repeats or tempo runs, but we vary in ability. Most of the time the store will have some watermelon waiting for us at the end of the run, and it a great store for all of your running/triathlon needs/wants. Come out and join us!
good luck at the disney, 13 minutes is a lot to drop! 8/15/2009 11:48:11 AM |

The paved loop is 2.86 miles.
The unpaved loop is 1.64 miles.
There's an out-n-back spur near the 2.5 mile marker that is 0.32 miles. The spur and paved loop make a nice 5k.
The path between Lake Dam and Gorman is 0.77 miles one way. 8/16/2009 12:26:58 PM |
