Shouldn't comment on fb directly, but today's attacks appear to be a politically motivated ddos.
Needless to say, it was a fun day 8/6/2009 9:07:07 PM |

Quote : | "A pro-Georgian blogger with accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal and Google's Blogger and YouTube was targeted in a denial of service attack that led to the site-wide outage at Twitter and problems at the other sites on Thursday, according to a Facebook executive.
The blogger, who uses the account name "Cyxymu," (the name of a town in the former Soviet Republic) had accounts on all of the different sites that were attacked at the same time, Max Kelly, chief security officer at Facebook, told CNET News.
"It was a simultaneous attack across a number of properties targeting him to keep his voice from being heard," Kelly said. "We're actively investigating the source of the attacks and we hope to be able to find out the individuals involved in the back end and to take action against them if we can."" |

By trying to silence him, they've increased awareness of him a hundredfold at minimum. What a brilliant plan. 8/6/2009 9:31:18 PM |

The US government only needed to silence him for a couple hours while they executed their carefully thought out plan (and several people, I'm sure). If that guy could have tweeted "Under attack by the West, DAMN AMERICA" it would have been even worse publicity.
Or he could have got word out to other anarchists that the shit was going down, and helped them get away. 8/6/2009 11:31:26 PM |

Might seem funny to you, but social networks are getting the attention of a LOT of governments and activist groups alike. 8/7/2009 12:37:39 AM |

If you're important enough to have millions of followers, seems like there'd be a pretty large blowback if you posted a goatse?

nah you dont need any followers. During the iran protests all you had to do was put in some attention getting news bite + shortened link to goatse + #iranelection and not only do thousands of people click it but they repost it without even clicking to verify the link
