I can make this a NASCAR-centric topic.

Since NASCAR has completely abandoned the original aesthetic of the Cup series, why don't they embrace technology and get rid of the tiny wheels and ancient engines that make the cars so goddamned ill-handling and unresponsive?

I suppose I'm more inclined to appreciate driving skill, and rain is the great equalizer in that department.

I really wish they'd bring back IROC in its original incarnation, where they used a combination of road courses and ovals and ran either RSRs or Camaros. I'd be very interested to see someone like Schumi run someone like Smoke in an identical GT car on a road course.

An IROC race at Hickory or South Boston would be pretty cool.

I wish they'd still run Cup races at the fairgrounds.

^there were never any cup races held at the fairgrounds that i'm aware of, or any major nascar sanctioned events for that matter. possibly you're thinking about raleigh speedway, which ran a few grand national (the top class at the time) events back in the 50's. my dad has some great stories from going to races there when he was growing up. it was the second ever super speedway, fwiw.

i really want to see some events come back to north wilksboro. i feel fortunate enough to have seen one of the final events there as a kid. supposedly it's been opened back up for some bush testing recently which is a good sign. last time i pulled in there everything was all run down, grass growing out of the cracks in the track, etc.

i stand corrected, partially. there were never any cup events at the fairgrounds, but i just called my dad and he said he recalled two grand national races being held around 1970. he attended one, which richard petty won....

The Last American Hero is a great stock car racing movie, Days of Thunder is more of a "Modern NASCAR racing for Dummies" film.

Cup is Grand National.

The NASCAR Grand National series became Winston Cup in 1971, but the name "Grand National" wasn't transferred to the Sportsman series until 1986.

Anyway, the point is that there were top-flight NASCAR races run on dirt at the fairgrounds.

eh, sort of... while it was technically the same series, imo it's important to designate between the two eras/names because of all the changes that rjr brought about. especially in relation to the fairgrounds, since rjr took the series away from all dirt tracks.

It has been several years since I watched The Last American Hero, so forgive me if my memory fails me; but if I remember correctly the ending sucks. You're sitting there watching it and you start to think things are finally turning for the main character...Then it ends in some fade to greatness moment, the credits start rolling, and you're like; "That's It?" Junior Johnson does not approve.

Days of Thunder was a good movie. Box office success or not...It was good.
