sad on multiple levels:

So was it Trump's plan all along to "drain the swamp" by being so poisonous to the GOP that they'd all just retire?

Lol, what the fuck is wrong with everyone tangentially related to trump in the GOP. A top fundraiser had Michael Cohen pay off a woman who he impregnated and then chose to abort the baby in 2017. $1.6m.

Why.... why did the GOP want these memos out? They make Trump look awful and incompetent. WTF?

I’m convinced they never thought Rosenstein would give them the memos and were planning on using it as leverage to give Trump cover to fire him. Or they are all Carter Page level stupid.

they didn't think all of them would leak, so they were planning on cherry picking things and using them out of context to smear comey and the investigation

it backfired

I was confused by that Wall Street Journal story. Were the memos classified before or after they were released? I thought that they were not classified, as of yesterday.

Lets give him the same punishment as Trump for “leaking” classified information to the Russians in the Oval..

Or not, since both had Original Classification Authority.

how exactly does a president leak classified info, considering they can declassify info at their discretion?

http://thehill.com/policy/national-security/384193-ig-investigating-comey-memos-over-classified-info-report

So did Comey at the time he wrote them. That’s why I put “leaked” in quotes.

Quote :
"The Journal reports that Comey gave Richman at least three of the memos, but blacked out information in two of them that he viewed as classified.

He gave Richman another memo in full that he determined did not include any classified information, one source familiar with the matter told the Journal. After Comey left the bureau, however, bureau officials reportedly decided the contents of the document were “confidential,” which is considered the lowest level of classification."

yep

in any event, this investigation by the ig is a perfectly normal and not unexpected action given everything going on.

so they'll work through it, report their findings and we'll proceed.

^^^Comey leaked the memos a week after he was fired, and there was content in them that was classified at the time he leaked them (and still is.)

[Edited on April 21, 2018 at 3:40 PM. Reason : not treason, just mishandling of classified information. At least Hillary wasn't leaking.]

Comey did redact some information he deemed classified. Again, he had original classification authority as head of the FBI. He can’t control what happens with regard to changing it to confidential well after the fact.

IG is fine to investigate but unless you are a Devin Nunes level hack this obviously is just procedural.

Putting aside whether someone supports the GOP or not, can we at least all agree that Mitch McConnel is one of the worst people we've ever had representing anyone?

trump said families were being seperated because of a democrat law and congress should do something about it, so i assume all the trumpists will be eager to sign this

I'm pretty sure we all know what his "solution" would be.

We've successfully.just dehumanized thousands of immigrant children and locked them up in cages. We're rapidly accelerating into, "oh, actually they're all crisis actors, and the ones that aren't are actually MS-13." Then comes, "why do leftist care more about these children than they do 'American' (white) children?" After that comes, "look, we have to stop these brown kids to protect your child's future."

We all know what happens after that.

This is the natural conclusion of a decades long campaign of white grievance politics. It is the deliberate attempt to avoid talking about economic modes of production and the battle between labor vs capital by bringing up cultural/racial/gender issues.

Yes, they are fighting the culture war because the economic war would turn every working class person against them. But spending decades manipulating media and convincing conservative white men that their enemy is brown skinned workers rather than their bosses is going to eventually lead to brown babies in cages. If they can convince them that this is acceptable, what can't they convince them of?

I mean, how else does this story end? What's more likely to happen given the current climate? The immediate disbanding of armed members of the state who are forcibly separating migrant workers and putting them in concentration camps? Or the open discussion about how best to "remove" these already dehumanized undesirables?

And right on cue, Brian Kilmeade primes his oinking audience to accept separation and detention because they aren't white "American":

“Like it or not, these aren’t our kids...Show them compassion, but it’s not like he’s doing this to the people of Idaho or Texas. These are people from another country and now people are saying that they’re more important than people in our country who are paying taxes and who have needs as well."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40_58PCuiVo

Whether he's intelligent enough to realize it or not, he's absolutely getting his base to intellectually accept a genocide as necessary to preserve "American" children.

^^^
If Dems can’t retake the House this story ends badly

The current laws (Flores) should be enough for courts to stop mass internment of migrants (like it did for indefinite family detention under obama), but they would change this law if they could, and if they don’t try soon they’ll have 2 solid years to figure something out

I think the average person is really underestimating what the Trump admin plans to do. They’ve asked the military to come out with a plan to intern 120,000 people, the same amount of Japanese we put in camps.

Difference is Japanese internment required an attack on Pearl Harbor on the background of global war to get people on board.

Trump has just been able to lie his way to internment— we’re in an era of record low crime, low illegal border crossings, stable economic indicators, yet trump has half the country believe MS13 is knocking on their doors and that immigrants=crime.

I can’t even figure out how there hasn’t been an injunction against mass internment when the Trump admin has admitted to average hold times of 50 days— outside of what’s allowable by law.

^
I think that’s a serious possibility. Loss of life in Japanese internment was very minimal, but a key difference is Trump wants to use these camps as a deterrent— dehumanization is the intent.

ICE for a decade now has been doing a garbage job caring for people in their custody, and since Sessions’ order to separate mothers from kids, this hasn’t changed. It’s not even clear they kept track of which kids belong to which parents. If deterrence is the goal, they’re going to let squalid conditions fester, and this will lead to deaths.

The other possibility is if protests or an uprising causes a violent reaction, there could be deaths.

There’s a reason mass internment is considered a human rights atrocity— it’s not a stAble mechanism to use for policy.

Something else to consider:
We’ve gotten extremely few pictures from inside the facilities, almost none where detainees are present, and NONE where they’ve been keeping the mothers and daughters. They’ve kept congresspeople out, denied the Red Cross access, aren’t letting journalists in, it’s a strange situation all around.

Obviously Trump, Miller, and Sessions are unabashedly racist, but looks like GOP pundits are starting to come around to making white nationalism the official party platform:

https://twitter.com/sullydish/status/1010244380211449859?s=21

Steve king and Tucker Carlson have been there, there’s some openly white nationalists running for state and congressional districts, can’t imagine it’ll be too long at this rate before it’s part of the 2020 platform to maintain a majority white demographic composition.
