and my dumb ass bought soft silken tofu, not really paying attention/knowing there was a difference

so now I have 2 packages of this stuff and I don't know what to do with it. i'm an amazing cook, so give me some basic ideas and I'll improvise from there.

i'll buy the firm shit next time so I can use it in my stir fry

chop it into small pieces
marinate it in a tasty yet healthy sauce
let it sit overnight
then cook it in a skillet, throw in veggies and enjoy

The joy of tofu is that it absorbs the flavors of whatever it touches.

that's what I did tonight, with a Jalfreze skillet paste. but since it was the super silky stuff, it fell apart.

i want texture.

^^^ If you're trying to decrease your cholesterol intake, but maintain your protein, then tofu is a great choice.

You can make it taste like other meats if you prepare it properly.

Good luck doing that with silken tofu.

With silken tofu, you can cut it into small blocks to throw in soup. Or you can eat it like the Japanese with just some soy sauce, grated ginger, and scallions thrown on top. I do that sometimes. Or you can puree it and use it as a substitute for ricotta cheese in lasagna or something.

cute into little cubes/rectangular prisms

boil with (slightly fatty) pork and collard greens

add salt and pepper

now throw it on some rice (with lots of the stew)

YUM

This is all stuff you can do with firm tofu. Silken is like cottage cheese, or yogurt almost, all you can do with it is make whipped fillings and stuff.

RAWR RAWR, IM A MAN DAMMNIT, I DONT EAT TOFU

we get it ok, very impressive.

And it doesn't turn you into a woman, I eat it often and I have pecks and a flat stomach, not boobs, and I'm constantly horny even if I had sex like four times that day, which i suppose is in itself a problem, although not a tofu related one.

my girlfriend is a pescatarian for a number of reasons, but one of them is health

she doesn't care if i eat meat...she doesn't berrate me or mock me or withhold sex or give me dirty looks...in the spirit of respect and consideration, i encourage her to make me tofu dishes a couple of times a month

really, tofu isn't bad...it is NOT a replacement for meat, in my mind, since the only thing it comes close to mimicking is chicken (which was impressive, i have to admit), but sometimes i just want some steak

i'll eat it and i actually enjoy it

hahaha, broadening your horizons by eating a flavorless gelatinous blob. What next -- broadening your palate by eating rice cakes?

sure, straight out of the package. but do you eat raw meat? no, so why would you eat plain tofu?

if you know how to cook it - it becomes anything but flavorless and gelatinous.

to each their own

i didn't care for it, myself, but i still love an extremely rare steak...i flame-kiss the outside just long enough to kill any bacteria and to warm it up

also, most tartares you find at a restaurant will have some sort of seasoning. it's not like the chef is just plopping some raw ground beef on your plate.

similarly, tofu won't just be plopped onto a plate either. there is seasoning and preparation involved

i had a kobe beef burger served to me in Vegas medium rare and i nearly barfed on the table

i am definitely not into the whole "rare meat" thing

and now i want some kinda tofu from whole foods for lunch they make a balsamic roasted tofu salad that is just the bees knees

then again, if you ordered Kobe beef anything above medium rare, the waiter has the right to vomit all over you for ruining a great piece of meat

^^it was a burger, not a steak. if it was a steak there would be no problem.

i think serving kobe beef all ground up in a burger is just plain wrong, but that doesn't mean i wasn't willing to pay $22 for it in Vegas

(and i ordered the burger medium)

(and this was Burger Bar, aka no steaks)

Without exaggeration, the best meat dish I ever had was beef carpaccio. That stuff was out of this world.

Anyway, silken tofu is used for:

smoothies
dips
cheesecake
quiche

great scientific observation there. doctors recommend two servings of tofu a day as a natural treatment to post-menopausal women. If it provides enough phytoestrogens to women to relieve menopause, then what do you think it is doing to your HTPA negative-feedback loop?

I had it rare and it was great, of course with prosciutto and peppered bacon on top also. However, I think I would have been just as happy with the regular ground beef. I also enjoy Carpaccio and raw steak "sushi" frequently. The comparison of tofu to meat is not a good one.
