I am looking to ride ride my maxi-scooter to Greenville (NC) next weekend for the ECU vs App football game. I was wondering if there was a good alternate route that anyone could recommend (besides 64 & US 264). I would rather take a scenic and enjoyable (though longer) back road ride through the country than a mindless highway ride, getting blown around by tractor trailers.

If you don't mind driving to Kinston, I could ask one of my buddies down there what the "back road" way is from Kinston to Greenville. He might know of a "back road" way that picks up earlier than Kinston.

Want me to check?

take 264-alt through bailey and all that and then cruise through wilson. then go pick up 222 near saratoga and ride up through fountain. pick up 43 and head into greenville. that should be some (relatively) interesting country roads

If you pick up 222 in Saratoga, beware of the cops in Fountain. They have a new police dept. and have lowered the speed limit to 25 through downtown. There's a blind turn just before Falkland that is pretty dangerous for slow moving vehicles. If you are hungry and passing through Fountain before 2:30, there's always Mickey's diner which has pretty good food, their selection varies during the week. There's also the R.A. Fountain Internet Cafe that is pretty neat and very nostalgic. After you pass Fountain, watch out for rock trucks that are ferrying between the job sites and the Fountain quarry. There's not much in Falkland, probably still fuel at the Roadside store if you need it. It's after 222 and 43 come together. You can go look at the Tar River right where 222 splits off of 43 and goes toward Belvoir. Just don't eat at the Peaden Grill in Belvoir... we don't like them anymore. Bruce is a small intersection on 43 where 121 goes off toward Falkland Elementary. Staying on 43 will take you past Rock Springs CC, Ironwood Golf Course, and a Hess station before you get into Greenville. You can ride the 5th street (NC 43 coming into Greenville) to Cotanche and turn right to go toward the Stadium.

Staying on Alt-264 will have taken you through Farmville instead and leave you out in the county most of the time with fewer small towns in between. There's a pretty good shoulder on Alt-264 too where they repaved it. Farmville is home of the Duck-Rabbit brewery, it's just off Pine St. I think. It's a pretty bland building on the outside though, the owner is pretty cheap.

Ham's in Greenville has a good selection of beer and has their microbrews within that T.L. brews and wins medals with.

Enjoy the game.

Cool deal, thanks for the suggestions. I'll be sure to give that route a try (as long as the forecast doesn't call for rain).
