so I've gotten a call from the same place multiple times over the last 6 months asking if I wanted to get DSL...in the past I've told them I already had cable internet and that it was faster, but they arent trying to hear that

anyway i just got the call again and i play it by ear...i say thanks for appreciating me as an AT&T customer, and yes i have a computer...then she asks how i currently get internet access and i matter-of-factly say "I steal wi-fi from my neighbors"...she basically says "oh so you are getting internet for free" and i say yes, and she says have a good day

Just got one from Direct TV. My current gig is to just be silent after saying hello and wait to hear what they do and how long they go on.

Spoke for 1.5 minutes before asking me a question. Then went through a cycle of her saying my name and pausing for about 20 seconds, for a total of 3 minutes. She was not pleased when she hung up.

I once had one call trying to sell me a subscription o the NY Times. I politely told her that I'd never learned how to read. She chuckled. Then I went off on her for mocking my disability.

I get a lot of those calls at work, i usually interrupt but some of them are almost clever...BUT if they say the words "i'm just calling etc etc etc" I hang up immediately cause they are just there for the paycheck. Now the pro's are fun to talk to, the ones that freaking love bahama global tour bus company or whatever.

I had a funny call from a bill collector call once.

After I told him that the person he was trying to reach no long owns my number (I get calls for Tonya Hinton all the time,) he asked me if I had "any unpaid debts that you would like to settle." I informed him that "No, I pay my goddamned bills on time and have excellent credit." He apologized and hung up immediately.

A friend of mine used to do debt collection calls. They all hate the job, but to amuse themselves, their alter-ego's were huge dicks to everyone they called. They seemed to have a competition over who could be the biggest dick and scare people more. According to him they didn't give a shit who answered the phone, they were going to dole out as much shit as they could to try to get the debt settled, because their pay hung on those numbers.

A little bit of my soul died just hearing that.
