Still don't like the keyboard but the OS looks smooth.

I have held both the droid and eris.

The eris is much more aesthetically pleasing.....the droid is fugly as all hell. The specs on the droid blow the eris out of the water.

I'll still be happy with the 3GS so long as Apple can get behind this Google GPS app. It looks incredible!

Currently the iPhone doesn't provide stats for the recent expansion of Google's local traffic data. (http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2009/08/google-maps-mobile-users-send-traffic.html)

I'm sure that would change if the app was ported to iPhone. Since the iPhone has such a strong base, it could be a win in terms of accuracy of traffic for google.

Droid Review
http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/motorola-droid-review/

Quote :
"It will be difficult for casual observers not to see the DROID as a kind of anti-iPhone in Verizon's arsenal. Certainly the company has played up the comparison with its "DROID does" ad campaign, and it's no secret that Verizon and Apple have previously had some friction -- the V famously passed on the first-generation iPhone, after all. Of course, it's easy to draw parallels between the two devices; as with most current smartphones, they share a tremendous number of similarities, though there is plenty that set the two apart as well. And that's really kind of the point -- it's useless to look at devices like this in black and white, or to try and figure out if an Android device on Verizon is better than an Apple device on AT&T (or any other device on any other carrier, for that matter). What it ultimately comes down to when judging this kind of device is more complicated than a "yes" or "no" answer.

If you must compare the DROID to the iPhone, then know that the Android platform still has a ways to go before the experience of using the phone is as seamless as the one Apple has created -- but also know that Apple has a long way to go before its messaging, email, and customization can match what Google is offering. Both products have very distinct strengths and weaknesses.

So, is the DROID a good smartphone? Yes, the DROID is an excellent smartphone with many (if not all) of the features that a modern user would expect, and if you're a Verizon customer, there probably isn't a more action packed device on the network. That's not to say the device doesn't have its faults; the camera was unpleasant to use, the application selection feels thin in both quantity and quality (despite the claim of 10,000 options), and the phone has bits of basic, non-intuitive functionality that might chafe on some users after a while. But even still, it's hard not to recommend the DROID to potential buyers eager to do more with their devices. It's easily the best Android phone to date, and when you couple the revamped OS, Verizon's killer network, and an industrial design straight from a gadget enthusiast's fever-dream, it makes for a powerful concoction. Ultimately, the DROID won't usurp the iPhone from the public's collective mindshare or convince casual users that they must switch to Android, but it will make a lot of serious geeks seriously happy -- and that's good enough for us."

I wish I hadn't gotten the tour on the multi-fru through verizon. I miss the big display and using a touchscreen is much more intuitive. The droid makes me happy. Wonder if my wife will care if I use her upgrade...

The odd thing is that Verizon doesn't do the MIR for Corporate accounts. They just go ahead and discount it for us. Bad thing is that I have to order it from my rep and hope they don't get sold out before I can get up with her.

I'll probably look at it in the verizon store and then order it online if I like it. They also have the instant rebates online plus free activation and free overnight shipping. Probably wouldn't get it til Monday or Tuesday though. Really wish they would've scrapped the dpad and extended the keyboard. Who the fuck needs a dpad on a damn full touch screen device? :carl face:

ha. DroidDon't do multitouch. But the GSM version doesn't include Google Navigator.

"Motorola MILESTONE does what DROIDon't
by Chris Ziegler posted Nov 2nd 2009 at 7:14PM

We've already seen the MILESTONE showing off multitouch capability, something the DROID clearly lacks in the States despite the fact that Android 2.0 rocks kernel support for it -- and now we've got another smoking gun: the official spec sheet. A quick glance at Motorola's tech specs for the Euro-flavored handset lists "pinch and zoom" as an interface feature, so yeah, it looks like this'll be in the shipping firmware. There's speculation out there that Apple was somehow involved in making sure that multitouch "fell" down a flight of stairs before reaching US-bound Android devices, but really, it's anyone's guess what's going on here -- and Moto's official statement isn't helping much:
"We work very closely with our carriers and partners to deliver differentiated consumer experiences on our mobile devices. At times, similar devices come to market with different features, depending on the region, carrier preferences and consumer needs."

Nor is Google's:
"The Android 2.0 framework includes support for multi-touch. As with other platform technologies, such as the text-to-speech engine, carriers and OEMs can choose to implement it."
So let the speculation -- and the firmware hacking -- begin."

"Verizon to aim for the smartphone crown
by Boy Genius on November 2nd, 2009 at 7:49am

One of our really solid connects just had some information for us and we think you’re going to love it. With the Motorola DROID being Verizon’s hot handset at the moment, you’d figure that the Moto would be it for a while, right? Well, if our guy is right, we could soon be bombarded with a lot more handsets. Apparently if the DROID launch/sales go really well, (is probably will) Verizon will push up handset releases and practically aim for the smartphone crown. Were talking HTC Passion, Motorola Calgary, Curve2, etc.

Apparently the Curve2 or HTC Passion / Dragon will launch on Black Friday, “whatever is ready first.” The second device would be used in a holiday push around mid-December. I asked why Verizon wouldn’t space this out more and he/she said “best network, best smartphones campaign.” Fair enough.

There’s also some handsets coming soon that we “don’t know about,” apparently. Could all four Android devices really launch on Verizon before the end of the year, or really close to it? Plus a couple BlackBerrys, and some other stuff that hasn’t surfaced yet? It seems a little crazy, but hey, more power to them.

UPDATE: We’ve also been told that Verizon will release 15 new phones, mostly smartphones, starting with the BlackBerry Storm2 and continuing into the end of December."

meh. I consider the pinch zoom shit to be multitouch cause well 2 fingers = multitouch. Yes there are other multitouch examples but that is the big one. Apparently google is scared of apple so only the GSM android has the pinch zoom included eventhough Android 2.0 and the droid support it.
