I do it so that my passenger side is next to the passenger side of the car beside me. This allows me to leave room for my driver side and the room for the driver side of the other car beside me. I figure most people are 1/car, thus don't really use the passenger side, so I can park closer to that side, leaving room for 2 people to get into/out of their vehicles. This wouldn't be a problem if people didn't make every parking spot the size of a damn golf cart

yeah i don't want my car doors dinged either. so i park on the end and hike it to the office and by "hike" i mean "walk briskly for 30 seconds".

really? there i was thinking that parking spaces were designed ergonomically

I've never had trouble with the space involved for me getting in and out of my car. I am a small dude though.

because when you do leave at ~5:30pm or so, others will be leaving too. This makes it easier to see and avoid having an idiot hit me.

I often back into spots but I almost always do it if I am in a large, busy parking lot like or a parking deck. I do it because its easy, doesn't take but an extra 15 seconds and when you leave you can see more of whats going on whats going on behind you (i guess if you pull in then its in front of you but hopefully you know what i meant).

good point^^...see better when you pull out..

I still dont have a problem backing out, because you do it slowly enough and people for the most part will stop to let you out.....I'm just not ever in a big rush though. Not my style

when I had the F150 I always backed in, its a lot easier to back a large truck into a tight space than to pull in normal.

lol@ neurotic southerners parking, fearful that somebody will ding their doors

people up here pretty much toss their shit wherever. when you get used to parking in a city, you give up on minor cosmetic damages

i just always find a spot to do the "pull through"

so i guess it looks like i back in...even though i don't

my dad says "never back up if you don't have to"....so it's a win/win for me either way

it's easier to me if you back out since you have more clearance than you do trying to get into a 10' wide spot b/w 2 cars.

at some chemical plants i've worked in it's been required to back in

for if you gotta get the fuck out in a hurry

however, i back in at my house at home, but not at my normal job

i have a cockamamie (sp!) idea that since my parking lot is on a hill, and im pretty sure my intake valve is in the front of my car, if i park with the nose lower than the rear it uses less gas to start up

enough less that it's noticable in time between fillups and mileage per tank

it's all bullshit i know, but i do it anyways

yeah my bumpers are FUCKED up..

and i'm not going to buy a new car until i move out of the city

maybe

more fuel efficient, you are doing more manuvering with your engine relatively warm rather than when it is cold. you idle longer.

of course the savings is probably a gallon over the course of a year...

i'm sorry, but when i spend 29k on a brand new car i'd like to at least take extra caution when parking so as to NOT ding the doors. it has nothing to do with where i'm from.

if i lived in yankeeville (aka THE CITY) i wouldn't have bought a brand new car, so i wouldn't care if it got dinged.

29k is not expensive for a car.

there's a guy in my building who drives a maserati and street parks

and gets dinged up like every other car

california isn't what we're talking about here

mcdanger is talking about the northeast

I don't do it, but on big vehicles it can be easier to get it in one attempt rather than having to pull in, back up, and pull in again. Being in reverse is like having rear wheel steering.

And sometimes you just don't see the park until you're almost past it. In that case you're probably not lined up to turn into it and it's easier just to turn the opposite direction, throw it in reverse, and back in.

haha yeah. an accord does not an expensive car make.

but back on topic, I always find myself backing into a spot at work since I can't find one to drive through. I can back my truck a hell of a lot better than I can drive straight into a spot.

^^^ & ^haha tell that to my car payment 29k is expensive enough for me. and it makes me park farther away.

and unless you live/work/play in New York City, i don't see why "not wanting your doors dinged" is a bad thing.

you people just wanna find something to talk shit about.

it's not my doors that get dinged when i have to parrallel park every where i go

it's people who use the cars in front and behind them's bumpers as guidance when to stop when parking that get me

that's pretty much it. Most of the time i pull through 2 spots normal (i'm not saying double park), that way i'm facing out when it's time to go. If i'm in deck with my truck i try to either find an angled space or i back in.

usually though, i dont mind walking a bit further to a)park in a "one banger", b)or leave myself some space in busy lots

I always back into my parking space at my apartment. I do this for two reasons:

1 - The parking area is very crowded and assholes sometimes park where there is no space making it difficult to get out of my space. Backing in just makes getting out easier.

2 - My parking space is next to a big garbage dumpster. One night when getting home late, I saw there was a raccoon hanging around the open dumpster door. Rather than pull in and get raccoon rabies raped as I stepped out next to the dumpster, I backed in so i could get out farther away. To this day I continue to do this.

I also never tell Reason #2 to anyone riding shotgun with me

Exactly. For some reason, it is easier to back a truck into a parking spot than to pull in head on.

Also, there is a fairly controlled environment when I'm backing up. The car one spot over isn't going to suddenly jump into my space. Being able to pull straight out of a spot gives me the visibility to not hit other cars, shopping carts, small children, etc.

That is relative to income. The kind of guy who owns a Maserati can probably afford to get it repaired with little damage to his lifestyle. Not everyone can pull that off, more power to you if you can though.

The same people who are bitching about "Southerners" caring about their cars would bitch about a parking lot full of dinged up cars as evidence that Southerners are just white trash. McDanger's comment says more about his own personal issues and judgementalism than it does about parking habits.

Yep. My F150 longbed pretty much has no hope of pulling in forward in most of the lots I use. I can't remember the last time I pulled straight in.

I back in to parking spaces so that I can leave easier. Its easier to leave a dimly lit parking deck where people are flying down the lanes with no lights when you can see. Its also easier to leave a parking lot directly beside a busy road when you can just pull out.
And,

I hate it when people do this with slanted parking lot spaces

because then their cars are facing the wrong way for the one-way traffic pattern on the other side

it's not any easier to get out of that than parking the way you should, backing out and going the correct way
