After keen observations over the last year or so I can now say that the pendulum has started swinging the other way... college football will now slowly start heading back towards more old school, traditional football. A few badass QBs have lit things up for the last 6-10 years and now every teams thinks they can throw it 50 times a game.

Too many teams are throwing too much and discovering they dont have the QB for it... I predict with the success of such teams as Alabama and the continued success of USC that programs will start to realize they are asking too much out of their QBs and will revert to a more balanced attack (notice how few RBs have won the Heisman lately?).

Will there still be crazy numbers thrown up by elite QBs? sure, that will always be there, but I think overall, system wide passing numbers will decline over the next 5 years or so.

I agree with you, partially.

College football will always have a viable spread offense with lots of passing, as well as a viable option rush offense with lots of running. The main reason is your average college defender is not your average NFL defender, so the option will always work to an extent, as well as using your WRs and routes to beat college d-backs.

I DO agree that the typical offenses can go in cycles, but throwing the football will never go away.

Never said it would go away, I just think the total passes attempted in college football as a whole will start to decline starting next year (maybe even this year). Scores will go down overall, not only from TD passes going down, but also less offenses setup by INTs from the defense due to QBs being asked to do too much, and less attempts means less incompletions which will keep the clock running more.

as so many teams started passing, dlinemen now consist almost exclusively of pass rushers. not many d hogs like cody anymore and des are really small and run 4-5s. This makes it easier for teams like gt to line up and pound defenses that would otherwise be dominant against teams that pass.

then you see guys like cody mean nothing when alabama plays a team like utah that doesnt run when their calling card all season was not letting anyone run in the sec where teams like to run.

the wildcat fad has helped seem to get the running game back in college and NFL

HOWEVER

I still see people passing as the main go to play...the majority of snaps will be passing. Everyone loves a good passing attack, players, coaches and especially fans all love the deep ball, tehre is no substitute.

It will probably balance out in the next few years but I dont see it taking over again.

completely agree. i don't know why teams have become so pass heavy. it is so much harder than just running the football. and, as we have seen with gt, alabama, and usc among others even if teams know you are gonna run it, if you do it right, they still can't stop it.

my fav. formation in football, and it always will be, is the i-formation. i think a lot of head coaches have forgotten that two three yard runs and one four yard run gets you a first down. not to mention, the football is a heck of a lot easier to throw when teams are worried about the run.
