his books are great entertainment
just don't think about them too hard...don't get me wrong, i've greatly enjoyed nearly every novel he's written, but just like all other "real world fiction," if you scrutinize them too closely, you'll be disappointed
i will undoubtedly pick up "pirate latitudes" on or a bit after november 24th 10/25/2009 4:35:57 PM |

^ i read that book 17 times...LITERALLY
growing up, it was one of my favorite stories...i am incredibly anal about the physical condition of my books, but my copy is in tatters from sheer use (careful use, even)
and while a lot of the scientific basics in that book were only half-truths, i can see something similar happening (a genetic disaster akin to the introduction of kudzu to north america, for example) 10/25/2009 4:40:39 PM |

state of fear is pretty terrible too. its a thinly veiled attack at environmentalists; i would be ok with that except it just became so repetitive that you wanted to throw the book down and shout, "OK I FUCKING GET IT" 10/25/2009 7:15:56 PM |

How many of his books climax when someone figures out that the problem is actually a result of human error when designing the system in question?
Congo, Jurassic Park, Sphere, and Andromeda Strain all struck me as similar in that regard. 10/25/2009 7:47:14 PM |

Sounds like this book has great potential. I'll check back in a little over a month to see if it's worth picking up 10/25/2009 8:17:02 PM |

one of my favorite movie adaptations of his books was "The great train robbery". I totally didn't realize until recently that he directed that. 10/25/2009 11:49:43 PM |

I tend to like his books, but I'm worried that they're just publishing this one to rake in a few extra bucks now that he won't be producing anything else. Like the publishers went "Oh, shit" and started rummaging around his estate for any manuscript they could find regardless of its quality. 10/26/2009 12:46:57 AM |

thinly veiled?
Are you kidding? it wasn't veiled at all. Everything in the book, including the TITLE pretty much told you exactly what it was; and it was a great read. If all you came away with was that he didn't buy into the environmentalist spin machine you missed a good deal of the point of the book.
Prey was fantastic. I haven't gotten through Next yet thought, it doesn't have the hook factor his others have had for me. Definitely checking this one out though; love me some pirates.10/26/2009 9:08:34 AM |

No, I was just being incredulous.
I've never read anything seventeen times except Calvin and Hobbes collections. I've probably only read my favorite books a couple times apiece. 10/26/2009 1:48:56 PM |
