Join UNC Aasha on this Thursday to learn about the growing problem of acid throwing in Bangladesh. Acid throwing, the practice of throwing with hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid on the faces and bodies of victims, is a common form of domestic violence for women in areas across the globe. Aasha is inviting Rotary World Peace Graduate Jane Welsh to speak about the history of acid throwing and the factors that influence this practice.

About Jane Welsh: Jane Welsh is a recent Rotary World Peace Graduate in the Department of Anthropology at UNC Chapel Hill. Her Dissertation “It was like burning in hell: A multi-country exploration of acid attack violence” investigates the issue of acid attack violence in Bangladesh, India and Cambodia. Acid attack violence is the intentional throwing of battery acid onto another person with the intention of disfigurement. Previously Jane lived in Bangladesh and Cambodia and worked with acid attack survivors at the Acid Survivors Foundation and the Association of the Blind in Cambodia. In this presentation, Jane will discuss this human rights violation and efforts by individuals and organizations to combat it." |

Kalaimamani Shri T H SUBASH CHANDRAN is a highly recognized percussionist from Chennai. He is a foremost exponent of Ghatam and Konnakkol (Vocal Percussion). He has performed in numerous concerts with all-time greats in Carnatic Music and with various philharmonics around the world. The concept for this program is by Shri. Subash Chandran.
Shri GANESH KUMAR is a Kanjira exponent from Chennai. He received the prestigious "Fulbright Fellowship Award" for 2000-2001. He has performed with leading musicians including Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi and Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, and also with many jazz greats.
Shri HARI KRISHNAN hails from a family of great musicians. Son of Shri Subash Chandran, he has undergone music training from Shri O. S. Thiyagarajan, Shri N. Ravi Kiran and others. As his interest in Carnatic music grew, he switched his career to focusing on the keyboard. He has performed on a number of commercially released CD’s and also composed music for films.
Shri. PALGHAT K. SRIDHAR, began learning violin under the tutelage of his grandfather Vidwan Shri Erode Viswanatha Iyer and later from his mother, Smt. Akhila Krishnan. He has accompanied several top visiting artists including Shri. O.S. Thyagarajan, and Shri R. K Srikantan.
ARJUN RAGHAVAN is a high school freshman from Chapel Hill . He started learning Mrudangam from Dr. Venkat Natarajan in New Jersey . He has subsequently come under the tutelage of Vidwan Shri Subash Chandran. He also learns from Shri. Sudhindra Rao here in Apex.
