In the last few days my almost brand new 80K mile tires have developed a TON of road noise and it's getting worse. Ironically when I make a left turn it tends to alleviate the problem.
The sound seems to be coming from rear driver if that makes a difference. Ideas?
EDIT: Forgot to mention I've been checking it almost every day and I'm not getting any heat like it's a bearing problem nor any weird wearing like it's an alignment problem. Going to have to hit up a mechanic it looks like, but wanted to try here for ideas first.

first off, I'd say tell your rear driver to lay off driving while you are... the fighting in steering, accelerating, and breaking between the two of you may be causing your problem, and many more. maybe you two could work out a driving custody schedule?11/3/2009 5:52:15 PM |

what tires are they? Have you tried changing tire positions to see if the sound follows? 11/3/2009 6:44:13 PM |

Pressure is regular, alignment was done a few thousand ago, pretty sure it's not the bearings.
They're Bridgestone 80K miles from Costco. Great tires. This has developed very quickly and is getting worse very quickly. Not sure whats up...
Thanks for input everyone. 11/3/2009 9:19:16 PM |

go back and have them rotate the tires to the front and go for a drive.
if the sound moved, then one of the tires could be bad. i.e. what daryl said. 11/3/2009 9:26:47 PM |

how are you "pretty sure it's not a bearing"?
don't say you can tell by looking at it or it only has XX,XXX miles either..

Sounds like a wheel bearing, and depending on the car, I'm not sure I'd feel safe driving it...
Also, I was a bit confused by your "almost brand new 80k miles" comment at first, then I remembered that they sometimes sell tires with the main selling point being that they theoretically may last X miles, and that people shop based on this. Just an interesting observation for me. I remembered that my cousin wanted to buy "100k mile" tires instead of the "80k mile" tires, b/c she figured they were better... 11/4/2009 1:33:34 AM |

haha
I can't even comprehend getting 80k out of a set of tires, much less 100k.
I don't know if I've ever gotten more than 20k or maybe 30k out of a set (and I've never done better than 10k with any kind of performance car) 11/4/2009 1:44:30 AM |

The Michelin MXV4 that came factory on 02-05 VWs were 50k mile tires on average. I sold mine with 14k on them, and they were at 8/32, and had perfectly even wear.
Now I'm getting about 12k per set, and my wallet hates me. 11/4/2009 3:08:43 AM |
