I need a new alternator for a 1999 Ford Explorer, 4WD, 4.0L SOHC. Anyone have any ideas about where to find one for cheap? They are like $150 at AutoZone and Advance. Any tips are very much appreciated! 11/7/2009 1:27:55 AM |

Dude...they really don't get that much cheaper unless you go hunting in a salvage yard. Now, if you had a '78 Chevy Camaro, things would be different. But you don't. 11/7/2009 2:32:34 AM |

Get it rebuilt if you can afford to wait a couple of days. My marine Ford alternator was $125 iirc. A lot of money for a rebuild, but he sandblasted it, painted it, and used all OEM parts. Let him know beforehand if you're paying cash.
btw...He doesn't have that shop on Westgate anymore. Currently in Durham off 70. Call for location. 11/7/2009 2:07:32 PM |

Hey, thank you all for the input. I couldn't really afford to wait so I just ended up ponying up for a rebuilt one with a lifetime warranty. It seems to be working fine. 11/7/2009 5:26:18 PM |

^ yessir good choice on the lifetime warranty. Be prepared to cash that bitch in every 3-4 years. Speaking from experience here. 11/7/2009 7:31:03 PM |
