I have a 1998 4Runner. About a month ago, I started having a problem with it. It won't shift out of park. I can shift it into Neutral with the car off by sticking my key in teh hole near the shifter, but I don't want to do this forever. Once I shift it into neutral, it shifts fine to every gear, however, once in park, I need to repeat the key trick. I believe that this is a netural sensor issue, but don't know how to fix it. Would anyone be willing to work on it if I buy the part?

its the lockout solenoid on the shifter, when you press the brake, it pulls in and allows you to shift out of park

first thing is to check and make sure the brake lights are working, if not, then the brake light switch on the pedal is bad

if the brake lights are working, then just take the shifter cover off, and take off the solenoid and don't worry about it, as long as you aren't worried about being able to shift it out of park with the key off

How hard is it to take off the shifter cover and remove the solenoid? Other than being able to shift while the car is off, are there any other mishaps that can occur as a result?

It's painfully easy.

My best friend's mom had this issue with her Maxima. After yanking the console, I found that the solenoid still worked, but there was some stiction and binding going on courtesy of a Mega Size fountain drink that had gotten dumped in the console. A thorough cleaning and some lube and alignment rectified the problem.

Of course, removing the solenoid and the linkage will also take care of the problem too. But for the general public who's used to having safety measures in place, I fix.

Anyone know how to fix it and is willing to for a nominal fee? Quote me a price and I'll decide whether to let one of you fix it versus taking it in to three A's.

I'd be willing to do it...but here's the catch. I most likely don't live near you, and it's not worth it for me to drive all the way from Lumley Rd. in Durham to do it. So...where do you live?

Jeepman is willing to look at it, but he is out of town. If someone wants to look at it, I will be very appreciative.
