^ normally i'd say that's irrelevant, but it's actually stayed pretty on-topic, ESPECIALLY for a shitshat thread

Yeah, I feel very sad for the RTP employees. I know a few. I was laid off from that shit hole of a company (actually, Ericsson) in 2001. As it turns out, it was the best thing that could have happened to me. And the tech unemployment in 2001 in the area wasnt much better than it is now. You will get through it (for those affected). Management for the company was so poor, this was inevitable.

^Well, I totally agree with you. SE constantly produced phones that were hip, stylish, and somewhat technologically up there, yet the company continued to go under.

I spent 7-8 months working there, and I have to agree that management sucked.

Great, this means my Uncle just lost his job. Happy Holidays to all those employees. I mean, I know lay offs happen. But it really sucks for him. 4 year old son, 48 years old and hard to find job prospects for someone without a college degree.

^Sorry to hear that, man. Well, hopefully his experience will cover for not having a degree.

Plenty of jobs in the federal sector. If I were without a job, I'd probably be moving to DC.

You know it is bad when jobs are being lost from RTP which has helped keep this region reasonably stable economically.

My dad lost his job there in the mass layoffs a year ago. I'm really glad he did, now. He found a better job and won't have to deal with this now super-saturated EE market.

Me on the other hand.

The XPERIA phone mentioned in the article wasn't even made by the guys at RTP. There were talks that it was developed by an entirely different company in Taiwan.

I posted this in the chit chat thread but it might be more appropriate in here:

I work there. It's no big surprise, a lot of us saw it coming. I just feel bad for the other employees with famlies and stuff. Keep them in your prayers or wherever you atheists keep your thoughts.

My mom worked there for 11 years and was with Ericsson before that...she was laid off in the previous round and still hasn't found a job. I used to work there back in 2001 but it was a short term contract

Damn, 20% of its workforce? That's piss-poor vision / long-term planning. Best wishes to the folks affected. And as stupid as it sounds ... there are plenty of temp holiday jobs available if income is needed.

I know two people that worked there. SE can go off itself. Have fun in the armpit of Atlanta.

Nice comment from Bev Perdue "Good things are happening in NC." Right.

There are some quality engineers that work there. Unfortunately, SE as an organization are terrible and I'm sorry that those good people are suffering for it.
