When Evans was hit with the first burst of electricity, blood spewed from the right side of the mask on Evans's face, drenching Evans's shirt with blood and causing a sizzling sound as blood dripped from his lips. Evans continued to moan before a second jolt of electricity was applied. The autopsy concluded that Evans suffered a bloody nose after the voltage surge elevated his high blood pressure" |

Quote : | "31. July 8, 1999. Florida. Allen Lee Davis. Electrocution. "Before he was pronounced dead ... the blood from his mouth had poured onto the collar of his white shirt, and the blood on his chest had spread to about the size of a dinner plate, even oozing through the buckle holes on the leather chest strap holding him to the chair."[45] His execution was the first in Florida's new electric chair, built especially so it could accommodate a man Davis's size (approximately 350 pounds). Later, when another Florida death row inmate challenged the constitutionality of the electric chair, Florida Supreme Court Justice Leander Shaw commented that "the color photos of Davis depict a man who -- for all appearances -- was brutally tortured to death by the citizens of Florida."[46] Justice Shaw also described the botched executions of Jesse Tafero and Pedro Medina (q.v.), calling the three executions "barbaric spectacles" and "acts more befitting a violent murderer than a civilized state."[47] Justice Shaw included pictures of Davis's dead body in his opinion.[48] The execution was witnessed by a Florida State Senator, Ginny Brown-Waite, who at first was "shocked" to see the blood, until she realized that the blood was forming the shape of a cross and that it was a message from God saying he supported the execution.[49]" |

^^^ incorrect
Quote : | "According to Executions in the U.S. 1608-1987 by M. Watt Espy and John Ortiz Smylka, it is estimated that 142 men have been judicially shot in the United States and English-speaking predecessor territories since 1608, excluding executions related to the American Civil War. The Civil War saw several hundred firing squad deaths, but reliable numbers are not available. Crimes punishable by firing squad in the Civil War included desertion, intentionally killing a superior officer or fellow soldier, and being a spy.
Capital punishment was suspended in the United States between 1972 and 1976, as a result of several decisions of the United States Supreme Court (Furman v. Georgia, 408 U.S. 238). The process resumed with the execution of Gary Gilmore on January 17, 1977, at Utah State Prison in Draper. The five executioners were equipped with .30-30 caliber rifles and off-the-shelf Winchester 150 grain (9.7 g) SilverTip ammunition. The condemned was restrained and hooded, and the shots were fired at a distance of 20 feet (6 m), aiming at the chest. In his biography Shot in the Heart, Mikal Gilmore wrote that when he examined the shirt worn by his brother Gary during the execution, he found five bullet holes, indicating that all members of the squad had been armed with live cartridges, and none with a blank round. The only other post-Furman execution by firing squad, that of John Albert Taylor in 1996, also took place in Utah. Taylor is said to have chosen the firing squad because it would be awkward for state officials. In Utah, the firing squad consisted of five volunteer police officers from the county in which the conviction of the offender took place. A law passed on March 15, 2004 banned execution by firing squad in Utah, but since that specific law was not retroactive,[13] four inmates (one, Roberto Arguelles died of natural causes on death row, leaving only three) on Utah's death row could still have their last requests granted. As of 2009, Oklahoma is the only other state in which execution by firing squad is legally available (as a backup method only; the state uses lethal injection as its primary method of execution).[13] However, on April 1, 2009,[14] a bill to eliminate firing squad as a method of execution in Idaho was enacted, and took effect July 1, 2009.[13] As of 2009, only Oklahoma and Utah have the option of the firing squad as a method of execution. After Utah executes, exonerates or commutes the three remaining inmates who can still possibly choose the method, it is likely the firing squad will never be used in the U.S. again, remaining on the books as a backup only." | ]11/24/2009 10:43:45 PM |

what? show me where cost was a primary concern
its never the thinking part of me that is for it, always the emotional side asks for it, then I try to make it sound reasonable. but the fact is its a fucked up thing to do to someone and its practice has no real legitimate reason beyond state sanctioned revenge. thats another debate altogether though 11/24/2009 10:44:19 PM |

we are too nice with our executions anyways. these people that are being executed probably carried out horribly crimes on their victims...and we are supposed to ease the criminal off to sleep...please. if the criminal skinned someone alive, thats the death the criminal should get. 11/24/2009 10:46:44 PM |

As much as I'd like to see some of the folks who do certain things slowly fed into a wood chipper, that isn't the morally correct thing to do. When the state executes someone (which, frankly, I think should be done for a lot more than murder) it should be in as quick and painless a method as possible. That's why I like hanging, beheading, and firing squad. Other stuff is too unreliable. 11/24/2009 10:56:53 PM |
