Well it's not like a normal person not realizing their pet is missing I guess. I'm sure this lady has deep-seated issues that are responsible, and she's either oblivious to things or apathetic.

perhaps reality tv will be our death. passing judgment on people in the guise of helping them seems to be catching on.
when the lawyers have their way and nobody is held responsible for anything anymore i guess the food and shopping channels will be sued off the air and replaced with 24hr "You gonna TOTALLY hate these people" channels

Did they get the lady cleaned out and settled at the end? My roommate kept changing the channel.

I don't watch it routinely but somewhere around dead cat #2 I admit it drew me in.

Also, this got my attention:

yeah they got her place all cleaned up. it still looked like a dirty old shithole, but at least it wasn't piled full of garbage.

the level 5 hoarder thing must be referring to how gross the person/house is. this lady was pretty willing to be filthy, but she didn't seem incredibly emotionally attached to stuff. the only stuff she was visibly upset about losing was her crocheting books because she makes money doing that stuff.

i watched an episode this morning about a guy who was somewhat organized, but just piled random stuff up everywhere, including like multiple rental properties he owns (doesn't rent them out). he wasn't willing to give anything up and they eventually stopped trying. they said the rental properties would rent for $4k/month..... and he's had them full of his shit for 20+ years. think of how much money that is............. insane.

show was stupid and boring. took too long to get going, they kept trying to push the story, that doesn't even matter, into the show which bored me...it sucked having to wait to get to see what type of shit was in the houses and they wasted my time by not just showing the cleanup. and it's fucking stupid because they're not even pushing the hoarders... tell the hoarders to shut the fuck up and throw their shit out.

Honestly, I think they could do more with this show.

Based on the episode with categorey 5 hoarder (the lady with 2 dead cats), the show basically seems to be about "look how much pain she causes her family and neighborhood from hoarding." No one seemed interested at all in figuring out why she continues to hoard in the face of so much pressure and to the detrement of her entire life (her second child was taken away because of her unsanitary living conditions). Normal, healthy people do not do this.

Heck, they did not even show anyone asking her *why* she is doing this to herself and her family.

If you are actually concerned with helping the person, diagnosing her underlying issues should be the first step. Otherwise she will simply fall back into the same old behavior.

Thankfully it looks like she is getting therapy now. But this show really seems to be more about "look how nasty this person is" than "lets help someone with a serious problem". Hopefully subsequent episodes will be better.

Have you never watched the show? Because they normally do ask why they do it, etc. One lady kept everything because her family was constantly moving and all she could ever get attached to is her stuff, then one day her dad burned all her things (in the 7th grade). So now she's super crazy and about keeping everything.

And last night they did address this lady's issues. She was talking about her mom constantly saying she shouldn't have had her and that she hated her. Seemed to me like the lady thought she wasn't worth anything and was like "why bother?" They also mentioned at the end how she is getting therapy by one of the main ladies helping on the show soooo I don't see how they weren't helping her out...

I watched last night at bed time.

This woman hoarded food. She had lived through times of poverty and at times didn't have a choice in what she ate or didn't eat. So she buys food when it is on sale. Lots and lots of food. An insane amount of food. The entire house was full of rotting food. And she was becoming upset that they were throwing out her food -- food that had expired years ago. She actually argued with them over throwing out organic chicken broth that had expired two years ago.

These poor people.

no, i have never seen the show before.

And I don't see a clear logical chain between "my mom hates me" and "i must live in filth after decades of living a normal life". And the actual therapist they had on camera was never asked to connect the dots (or even to hazard a guess).

Now, I guess we (the untrained viewers) could make wild speculations about what was driving this woman's self-destructive behavior. The impression I got was that the woman actually lived a normal life until her second child's father left her. Maybe she entered some sort of cycle of depression that left her unable or just unwilling to care fore herself and her kid?

Like I said, I hope other episodes of the show gets better. If this was a rare miss, that's good to know.

I say these producers should take the hoarders out of the house, say go shopping for the day, and while they're out, burn the fucking house down, and bring the hoarder back to witness the last pieces go up in flames

^4 Way to make a generalization and suggest all kids with Down's do things like shit themselves. I have met a girl with Down's who graduated on high school on time. Way to go.

Back to the topic, this lady was different than the ones I've seen before. But after hearing her talk about her mom it seemed just like you said, she had crazy depression and just couldn't care for herself. I thought it was sad when she didn't even know how to react to people doing nice things for her (like getting her the new recliner).

I was surprised she wasn't flipping out when they took her stuff though... The people I've seen before have panic attacks and shit because they can't handle the cleaners throwing out anything.

And just a week after the producers of the show got their crew to stuff 9 thousand pounds of debris, including animal remains, into her home.

I don't believe/trust reality TV. People will do/say anything to get attention. That said I have seen homes that had garbage stacked to the windowsill.
