..does not end well. My 1st gen 512 mb iPod shuffle just died on me. My important stuff was backed up, but I still want to try to retrieve the files if possible. Anyone know how this can happen? I keep getting an I/O device error when I try to access the drive, which I'm assuming means I'm screwed. 12/1/2009 8:09:53 PM

you probably removed it without unmounting it.
There are utilities that can recover stuff from flash drives sometimes. 12/1/2009 8:10:51 PM

I have successfully removed data from a corrupted flash drive that wouldn't work on windows using a linux live CD (knoppix in my case). If you've not used linux before, you might want to find a good tutorial or get someone experienced to walk you through it though. 12/2/2009 1:01:24 PM
