I'm looking for a relatively quiet wine bar/lounge with comfortable seating, decent selection of wine and a nice atmosphere. I'm just want to be able to sit down and talk over a glass of wine with my special lady friend.

I like West End wine bar in Chapel Hill, but it can get kind of loud on weekends (it is on Franklin street after all). Has a rooftop patio, which is great in nice weather, not so great at this time of year. They just opened a location in downtown Durham too, near Brightleaf, but I've not gotten over there to check it out.
I know there are a couple on glenwood south too, but I don't recall the names. Mosaic? Or is that a club? There is/was one behind the old Hard Times Cafe location too, but I'm not sure if it's still open.

No, Mosaic sucks. If you go on the weekends it smells like feet and you can't hear yourself think. Wine selection is shit as well. 12/3/2009 1:16:22 PM |

Duly noted...I've only been on weeknights when there was nobody else in the lounge area except my party. Still a good mid-week hangout. 12/3/2009 1:35:14 PM |

The wine bar in West Village in downtown Durham is meh...like 5/10...I was there during Troika to see some singer/songwriters play. The atmosphere/"ambience"/whatever was decent, but the furniture was kinda tacky and the appetizers are way too overpriced for what you get. I think we paid like 8 or 9 bucks for a handful of trail mix, crackers, and a dollop of hummus. Assumedly good selection of wine. If you are in Durham, I'd suggest hitting up Whisky on an offnight-especially Thursdays with the NCCU jazz kids playing. Or, for dinner as well, Revolution is supposed to be pretty good.
There is also a more upscale bar called the Republic that just opened last night near Bull McCabe's- my partner liked it. I haven't been there yet. 12/3/2009 6:24:52 PM |

If I want a good wine list and a decent atmosphere I'd be inclined to just go to the bar at Sullivan's. 12/3/2009 6:27:59 PM |
