Some developer looking to build a hotel on TX/Trinity lot. Source is Packpride. Looks legit. Here's the site plan submitted to city of raleigh (big file)

wait, what is "tx" and how would this screw things up. This would be great, wouldn't it? The main problem with that area is that theres no good development within close proximity (ie not being downtown)

I don't believe the university owned that land and were just leasing it...no telling how much it sold for.12/4/2009 6:11:48 PM |

its right next to it. Look at a parking map of CF. they are both on trinity across from the fairgrounds, between CF lots and DOT.
That hotel is gonna hate anytime theres a game... Or love it, as they will be full. 12/4/2009 6:13:06 PM |

Rather than a hotel I think it'd be cooler and better for them to put up condos there. It's worked out great for South Carolina. Plus the pregame parties there are supposedly awesome. The units sold for a pretty nice chunk of change from what I've heard. 12/4/2009 6:13:47 PM |

even if they steal the fairgrounds lot from the students to give to the alumni it won't be quite the same experience. oh wellz. 12/4/2009 7:08:53 PM |

but you know it won't. NC State will fuck it up somehow, like already stated, by taking away tailgating from the students, or jacking up the price in some other newfangled "lot" 12/4/2009 7:52:09 PM |

How is wanting to keep a sensational tailgating spot lacking in perspective? How exactly will a hotel enrich the area? There's already a crappy one down the street that is empty except for 6 weekends a year.

There are currently 2 separate parcels that comprise the site proposed for the hotel. Neither is owned by the University. They both appear to be old parcels that have been left to heirs.
Tax value on the 2 pieces combined is around 4.8 million dollars. I have no idea how much the Wolfpack club current pays to lease that land each year for football parking, but I sure hope they are at least considering a counter-offer on the property. 12/5/2009 12:03:48 AM |

it's totally legitimate for people to be upset about this. Tailgating is half most of the experience in going to NC State football games. Do you think we would keep our stadium as full all these years that we've sucked if tailgating was not what it is around here?
I've been to 15-20 other major college football stadiums and we have one of the best tailgating atmospheres around. It's a tradition where NCSU actually excels and if people are concerned about losing some of that then they have a legitimate concern. Especially with the plethora of ways we've been fucked by the university in the past
but go ahead mambagrl, tell us how you know better than all of us 12/5/2009 12:27:22 AM |

^ what he said really isn't a joke. It's been said by the NHL that before Raleigh can host an All-Star Game (which would bring in a shit ton of money to the local economy), the area surrounding the RBC Center needs to be built up more, i.e. with more hotels, restaurants, transportation, etc.
Now, I am ALL FOR having an ASG here some day. But I think they could find some other locale to put this hotel, rather than taking over a good portion of the tailgating spots. 12/5/2009 12:41:33 AM |

i travelled to wake forest and VT this year, and duke and carolina last year. nc states tailgating is head and shoulders above these schools and i think a good majority of us would like to keep it that way. hows that for perspecitve 12/6/2009 9:46:31 PM |

I do think that the area around the RBC Center needs to be developed a bit with some nice, big hotels and restaurants, but not at the expense of these tailgate lots. I'm not familiar with where else they could put these places, but even though I want them to be built, I don't think the alums should have to sacrifice their lot, or the students end up sacrificing theirs. 12/6/2009 10:22:04 PM |

The Fair plans on adding a ton of new parking around the Edwards Mill Extension. Eventually. (and they also plan on removing the existing parking lots that are currently the student lots for FB games)
Quote : | "the hotel plans do not cross westchase... they will not be overlooking the practice fields, at least not as close as that picture above makes it look like, dunno how many floors it will be" |
Are you referring to the map that Walter drew? His line indicated the boundaries of the property owned by NC State, not the boundaries of the hotel property. (And might have just been refuted by Moox) The hotel boundaries are very clearly shown in the PDF linked in the first post.
from some random dude on Urban-Planet:
Quote : | "It will have 358 rooms and two towers. One 125 feet tall and the other is 115 feet tall." |
For reference, the NC State Bell Tower is 115 feet tall. This building is 140 feet and ~10 floors tall: http://www.emporis.com/application/?nav=image&id=523857 (Odd Fellows Building at Harget and Salisbury)
So the proposal hotel is rumored to be ~7 and ~9 stories tall.

Absolutely not. It's very likely that there will be a new arena downtown in 20-30 years, but it's a safe bet that Carter-Finley will always be the home of NC State football, and even if a new arena is built downtown, there is a good chance State basketball will continue to use the RBC Center.12/7/2009 1:58:32 PM |
