Overtime- Would be conducted in a manner similar to college or instant death OT has to be won via TouchDown. A game should be won purely by skill not the flip of a coin. Statistical evidence has shown the team winning the coinflip overwhelmingly wins the game .599 versus the expected odds if each team were given a possession 50%
. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/30/sports/football/30mailbox.ready.html?oref=login
Rules about hitting the QB- No more pussy slides of "don't hurt me" to prevent being tackled. If a defender is obviously being carried via momentum into the QB right after the ball is flown it is not roughing the passer.
Falsestart- Would be desensitized at the least. I am tired of having the game stopped b.c a o-lineman flinched or decided to pick a booger. At the extreme I wonder how football would be with the rule completely removed.
Safety- As difficult and rare safeties occur I think they should be worth like 4 or 5 points.
Challenges- If a challenge is successful; a team should get to keep the challenge. In contrast to the current rules that state a team has to get both right. If an official is wrong he's wrong and the call should be reversed. Understandable is the "2" challenge rule to prevent abuse. Lets pretend though officials make 3 bad incorrect calls. The first one gets reversed. The second lacks indisputable video evidence and stands. The team should not get punished for the 3rd incorrect call.
Playclock- Shorten the play clock to 25 seconds. Given that the average game only has 12 minutes of actual action; I find this a good way to increase the plays in the game. As an added bonus this rule would decrease the situations where a team up by 1 point just sits around with their thumbs up the ass, just running down the last 1 min 30 seconds of clock.

The overtime, i don't have a huge problem with because its the price you pay for not winning in regulation. It would be cool to see like a full 7 minute period though12/6/2009 7:44:00 PM |

without false star you would have to redefine when the play starts. it would also essentially turn into the offense pumpfaking the defense to sleep and winning the los on every play. 12/6/2009 7:45:18 PM |

A coin flip should not be the defining factor of winning the game. I think a "instant death" could be cool if you just were required to reach the endzone.

what's the stat on the team that gets to call defense in college football first winning? there's benefits to everything, sorry if that 9% means you lost, you weren't really good enough to win in regular time so who the fuck cares 12/6/2009 7:51:29 PM |

^^ Yeah i don't get his objection to that. Any player can slide, it's just that QB's do it most often because they are more valuable (plus they usually suck at running with the ball and so get hurt/fumble more often).

I like the idea of the first team to 6 wins. If you kick a field goal you have to stop the other team from scoring a touchdown, but giving up a field goal to start doesn't end the game for you.

Touchbacks- Players should have to attempt to run the ball back. If they don't touch it or give up in the end zone the ball should start on the 5 yard line. If the booming kick goes out of bounds though then putting it at the 20 yard line is fine.

while I dont agree, he's not saying they're no longer allowed to slide period...

The stat is that 59% of the time the team that loses the coin toss never even -SEES- the ball. 60% of the time you automatically lose just by randomly guessing the flip wrong.
pretty compelling stat that indicates that the overtime rule is pretty gay to me.12/6/2009 8:45:22 PM |

I have absolutely no problem with the NFL overtime system. I think it encompasses more of football than the college system, which completely changes up the rules. At the same time, I LIKE the college system, but I also like the fact that there is a little variety between the NCAA and NFL.
I think the NFL stays a little more true to the game. They basically say "ok nobody is ahead after 60 minutes, we'll play 15 more, same fucking rules, except its sudden death". That way, its not just offense, defense and a fraction of special teams, like college, but its offense, defense, and special teams.
The only change for overtime that I would support in the NFL is if they proposed instead of sudden death, to just add one additional quarter. In that sense it would just be like the score was tied at the end of the 3rd and they play one more quarter. You could strategize clock management just like you would in the 4th, as opposed to playing for a field goal. They could simply extend the game to 75 minutes.] 12/6/2009 8:53:15 PM |

I dunno how lucrative rugby is...but lets be honest. In the NFL, it is ALL about the money and if you lose your name brand QB you are going to lose a lot of money. Imagine if a player like Peyton Manning had a career ending injury. The Colts franchise would miss out on an enormous amount of money b/c people will come to games just to watch him play, and people will buy jerseys just b/c they have his name on it. That sort of thing is why they protect them so much.12/6/2009 9:32:56 PM |

The false start suggestion in the OP was absolutely retarded.
Regarding OT, I agree that it makes it more like real football, but I think if you make it to overtime, each team should have an equal shot to win. They could just play for an equal number of posessions. So if you score on your first posession, you have to kick off and the other team gets a chance to tie or win depending on whether a TD or fg was scored. Or if one team has 2 posessions and the other team has had 1, scoring team has to kick off and prevent other team from scoring. It would get confusing for retarded fans who can't count posessions, but its at least fair. 12/6/2009 9:45:44 PM |

My head hurts from reading some of this.
Overtime - Keep it the same except that each team should get the ball once. So if you win the coin flip score, you kick to the other team they don't score game over. If you get the ball to start, punt, the other team gets the ball it is just sudden death at that point. A college system will never be in place because the potential for the games to go an extra 30 minutes and TV won't let that happen.
Hitting the QB - As much as I hate the way they do protect the QB, I'm not trying to spend my afternoons watching Dennis Dixon vs. Kevin Kolb. There are so few quality QBs in the league as it is, and they are so important to the quality of the product they need to be protected in some way. They still take plenty of hits.
Falsestart - wtf? So you just want players shifting moving doing whatever they want? The offense gets enough advantages as it is, the least you can ask of them is to get set.
Safety - 2 points and the ball in great field position seems fine to me.
Challenges - You complain that falsestart penalties are slowing the game down, yet you want coaches to have an infinite number of challenges? They get 2, use them wisely, and potentially 3. The setup now is fine, it keeps it from being overused in non important game situations. 12/6/2009 9:50:23 PM |

Ok we'll keep false start penalties. Who though does not agree though often they are overly sensitive to this call. It is one thing if the O-Lineman blatantly moves or lunges pre-snap. On the other hand if they are in the meadowlands and a strong gust makes the Right tackle have to move his hand 1/2'' to regain balance or he twitches cut them a break.
Quote : | "yet you want coaches to have an infinite number of challenges? " |
An incorrect call is an incorrect call. The 2 challenges thing is fine as a safeguard to prevent abuse but if a shitty ref has his head in his ass, a team should be able to challenge the call even if they get their two and the bonus challenge correct.

Bad calls happen, 2-3 reviews is plenty it isn't suppose to be there to review every spot of the ball and every little missed call throughout the game.
Again, you have 2 examples where the game moves to slow for you(don't want false start penalties and a 25 second clock but want there to be unlimited reviews)?

maybe it was extreme to say get rid of the rule but on the mild side whats the problem. From my opinion i yawn at the fifty billion false start penalties that occur every game. If an olineman is jumping up and down or making crazy arm movements sure throw the flag. Just asserting that the refs should lay off a little though i do not see as such an absurd idea.
