I'm driving to Montgomery tomorrow to drop my daughter off tomorrow afternoon. I can't really make it all the way back to Raleigh (or New Bern, or Durham, or anywhere else I'm inclined to go) in one day.
Any ideas to keep me entertained? Not many ideas come to mind for things to do alone. 12/11/2009 10:06:50 PM |

The one time I went to Atlanta I had crack dealers trying to sell me drugs, offering prostitution, and at one point ended up on a street covered in blood 12/11/2009 10:34:24 PM |

coke factory tour was pretty fun when I went (10+ years ago) and there is the underground mall as well IIRC. 12/11/2009 11:04:29 PM |

yeah, i've done both of those things years ago...might go to the underground mall and walk around if I can't think of anything better to do. it'll be kinda late to do the Coke plant by the time I could get back there. 12/11/2009 11:14:01 PM |

Montgomery? Not much. If you do stay and are looking to just chill, you should go to Sous La Terre. They don't open until 1am, and it really isn't much more than a basement with a couple of 70 or 80 year old guys playing the trumpet and the keyboard till they have to shut down and go to Church in the AM, but it has it's own feel. It might bore you, but I dig it.
Birmingham has a lot more to offer than Montgomery, though I can't give you specifics. I usually just pass through on my way north of there to climb. 12/12/2009 10:05:50 AM |

...so I ended up staying in the Ramada right by the Atlanta airport. It was kinda weird--pretty good-sized 4-5 story hotel, and as best as I could tell, I was the only whitey in the entire place! It wasn't like "hey, look at that, I'M the minority here"...it was more like "Did I miss something? Was there some indication that I didn't notice that marked this as a "black establishment?" It was like some Jim Crow shit. 12/16/2009 1:10:03 AM |

yeah, but it was an airport hotel. it just kinda struck me as a little odd to literally be the only whitey I saw anywhere in the hotel during my stay. 12/16/2009 1:21:45 AM |

You going to Pensacola any time soon? I need an excuse to go back to the Flora-Bama before I leave Fort Rucker. 12/16/2009 7:18:32 AM |
