I just watched it, I liked everything I was awake to see. I've been so tired lately though, I couldn't help but to nap a little bit during the movie.

saw it on opening night. Awesome movie. I'm not normally a fan of Matt damon, but he did a really good job with the accent. I think an Afrikaans accent is one of the hardest accents to fake.

I wouldn't call myself a diehard rugby fan or anything, but being married to a south african means that I watch a fair amount of rugby with her family. It was pretty clear that the scenes playing rugby featured people who have no idea how to play rugby. But i'm sure it would be the same if a foreign film company tried to portray football.

But overall, I loved it. will watch again.

I used to play Rugby in school when I lived overseas...I would have to agree with you there. Although for a movie I think they did a pretty good job so it was easy to over look.

Our rugby team is planning on going tonight. I hope this movie will spark more of an interest in rugby. Unfortnately, I didn't start playing until after I graduated from NCSU. I wish I would have gotten interested in it a long time ago.

saw it last night, and didn't think it was too bad. the accents are a bit tough at times, but freeman makes a great mandela. cheesy? yes. a good movie? yes. worth seeing once, at the very least, if for nothing else then to celebrate a really great story line.

Golovko may be the person I hate most on this whole board. "yuk yuk yuk Americans don't know anything because the sports that are popular with them are different from the sports that are popular with me!"

Whatever, dude. A shame whatever happened to your spine couldn't destroy your ability to type.

At any rate, I couldn't give less of a damn about the rugby but I plan to see it for the political aspect (and because Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela may be the most awesomely obvious choice in history, and because Clint Eastwood makes good shit).

---

To those who have seen it, how much of the focus would you say is on sports stuff?

what are you, an idiot? What part of what I said did you not understand. What I said was accurate...if you can't handle it, then stfu and go watch angels in the outfield or some shit.

and 'popular with me'? where the fuck did you get that from...whats popular here isn't popular overseas and vis versa...get over yourself.

and then you go and prove my point in the same post...

I understood perfectly. You completely wrote off an entire country as full of ignorant asses.

And what did I prove? I don't give a damn about rugby, just like I don't give a damn about sports in any movie. I don't really like sports. If the movie has something else to offer, though, maybe we can talk. Which is why I asked about the political aspect, which is odd given that, as an American, I apparently don't care about it.

What's the epithet you picked up in chit chat? "Officious prick?" Sounds appropriate.

I don't see why you are so offended by someone saying 'Americans don't care/understand Rugby' and then you come in here and say you don't care about Rugby? What have I missed? I would say the same thing if they released a football or baseball movie in the middle east or hell, Europe. "This movie won't do well here because Europeans/Arabs don't understand/care about football/baseball"

I think the point you're trying to make is that you're a tool just looking to derail a thread.

if you found this...

I'm sick of your "ignorant american!" routine. This is hardly the first time it's shown up. Again, I don't give a fuck about the sports. It's your effort to tie that to the fact that we "don't know about or understand" the rest of the world.

At any rate, I got my answer to the effect that the sports thing isn't the main, defining feature, so I can go see it without fear that I will be bored to tears with the game details.

Yes it is pretty straight forward. Americans don't care about rugby as you and so many others have said. So what part of not caring about Rugby makes you ignorant?

Looks like you are projecting an opinion that no one expressed onto someone just to argue. Americans by and large don't know/give a shit about rugby, and I don't see how that's controversial at all especially since you expressed that same sentiment earlier in the thread.

I mean really?

Look I don't really think Glovoko meant anything inherently disrespectful in his post, but it doesn't take an excessive amount of genius to see Grumpy's point; even if you disagree.

Saying Americans don't care about or understand rugby/other nations politics can come off as condescending to Americans. 'Understand' can be taken to imply that even if Americans showed interest, they're too stupid or ignorant to 'get it'.

Either way there seems to be a bit of history fueling this. So carry on!

^except I'm just as American as him...so I don't see why I'd be calling myself ignorant? I just happen to have been exposed to rugby at a younger age because I went to a British school from kindergarten until 6th grade at the same time I wasn't exposed to baseball or 'American Football' (what we called it) until I moved to the United States...so its hardly calling someone ignorant because they don't care/know about a sport that isn't part of their culture.

The part where you're calling us ignorant is the part where you say we don't know about or understand another nation's politics, especially since it implies that everyone else in the world does have that understanding. Otherwise, why would you mention it and expect the film to do well anywhere other than South Africa?

There are plenty of Americans who love to go on and on about how stupid their country is. You'd hardly be the first.

And the "I've never heard of Grumpy" bit is unconvincing. I can find at least one incident in the past few weeks where you directly responded to something I said, and a good many more in which we both posted at length.

Would you like me to have listed out all the other countries around the world where this movie also wouldn't do well for the same reasons? You know, since its relevant to a movie being show in the US?

Seriously, get the fuck off your overly sensitive ass high horse.

I'm not offended by you not remembering me. I might not remember you if you weren't always being such a colossal dick. I just wanted to dissuade anybody from getting the idea that I just popped up out of nowhere to give you a hard time.

Let's just lay out the bare facts here:

You said that you did not expect the film to do well in the United States in particular because we don't care about rugby and don't know anything about or understand the politics of other countries. I was sick of the whole bit about Americans being ignorant of the rest of the world and called you a dumb shithead. You called me a dumb shithead back. Now we are pretty much just taking turns calling each other dumb shitheads.

Unless you feel like something is going to radically change the present course of exchanging variations of "Dumb shithead!" I suppose we can let it peter out in this thread for the time being.

And I will admit that the main reasons are that I don't care about politics in general (esp that of another country) or rugby.

I mean, you do realize that this is accurate for the majority of Americans, right?

Sure, this doesn't apply to most of TWW, as we are college educated or in the process of being educated, but we don't make up the majority of the population. The majority of Americans are ignorant of pretty much anything outside of their wal-mart world.

wat

and do none of you remember 1990 or the election? really? this country was watching south africa very closely, it should not be that hard to understand why their story resonated so clearly in this country. so maybe this country isn't that involved in international politics but this is a story that is well known in this country. the news talked about it daily, school kids read about it in class, it was discussed in homes across the country.

it was great..

if this movie adequately portrayed mandela to a T, wow, what a man and what a leader.. wish some of our politicians would take some of his advice and know that the best way to run government is not to ignore the other side, but to win it over by showing it respect.

I know nothing about rugby, but you didnt need to know anything to really enjoy the movie.
